No, it isn't. Crash ... crash ... crash ... all night long.

If you live there long enough that you're accustomed to the noise, maybe. Otherwise? crash ... crash ... crash ...

Btw, I love the ocean. Just not that close.

We can hear the waves-- especially when the tide is in and it sounds more like thunder.

whatever you want to call it, there is definitely a stream of crashes or thunder or waves hitting the shoreline all night long.....and all day long (but during the day in the summertime you dont hear it as much from our condo because the noise of the people makes it less noticeable). you can even hear it at night if the doors are closed....that is how loud it is.

being a Cali gal............it's hard to believe someone has never seen the ocean........I'm sure there are people who haven't ..........but it's still hard to imagine that LOL.........................raven

....not so hard if you look at a map of the USA. The majority of Americans live far away from any ocean.

eactly...........it's just hard to believe that at some time in one's life one hasen't driven by the coast on their way to someplace else.........flown over it.......made it a vacation destination.......I guess it happens that some people have never seen it.......but it doesn't make it any less hard to believe......................................raven

I don't think it's that hard to believe, raven. There are people who aren't as fortunate as others, and a vacation, or any type of travel at all isn't in the cards for them, and may never be.

Noel, Lotus, and muttmom, TY for the kind words! I wish I'd been able to do more back then.

Back to gidget's thread...

That has been our situation. We went to a wedding of my DH's niece in Maryland and it was so foggy I couldn't see the ocean. One other time, in the 90's I visited my aunt and uncle and again.....foggy! After that we had some tragedies' and health problems that nixed all vacations. We have been to the mountains and I love the mountains. I love the Great Lakes, too. Sometime before I die....I would love to see the ocean on a clear day!

jubilant, I hope you do get that opportunity!

We do become accustomed to the sounds (I am reluctant to call them noises) around us. I love the sound of the waves and seagulls.

We also have an apartment in midtown Manhattan. There, there is a fine line between sounds and noise. Our dog has difficulty sleeping when we are in the city, but at the shore he sleeps through the night.

Sabatini2, your story was touching.

Re: Today's random question- has anyone here never seen the ocean?

I hear of a lot of folks who were born and raised in the deep south and they spent most of their lives never seeing the snow. Someone on the radio was talking about when they were in the service in the WWII era, and they were stationed with some young men from AL. During the first snowstorm of the season (wherever they were stationed), the guys from AL ran outside and were jumping in the air and running all around at the excitement of seeing a real snowstorm.

I know many won't be able to share their enthusiasm, especially after the winter-from-you-know-where that just ended, but I know how they must have felt. Even though I was brought up with all 4 seasons, I get that little kid/excitement feeling whenever we get an especially large storm, especially the very first one. Smile

ITA. I grew up on the Jersey Shore, loved the sounds of the waves rolling, the seagulls, everything. I really miss all the sights and sounds now that we're out of state.

We have a summer home in Michigan. It's fairly close to train tracks.

There is something so soothing about hearing the train rolling through town in the middle of the night. Usually, we're so tired, we sometimes don't even hear it. LOL

Re: Today's random question- has anyone here never seen the ocean?

I grew up in Appalachia, so I knew lots of people that hadn't seen the ocean. I was fortunate to experience seeing it as a child and an adult. Now, I live near the one of the Great Lakes and love it here, however the mountains are calling me, maybe in a few years, I can make that move.

Re: Today's random question- has anyone here never seen the ocean?

I was just there yesterday visiting my daughter who lives on LBI (Jersey shore), granddaughters, and my other two daughters who live up here and who have been going down every weekend. The beach was phenomenal, we saw dolphins (they love this part of the shore for some reason, they are there every day). This was the sixth gorgeous weekend in a row. I get such a sense of peace and relaxation on the beach. We had three umbrellas up and several beach blankets. Of course I was covered from head to toe, just took my shoes off so I could wiggle my toes in the sand. My daughter's part of the beach is never crowded, so we feel as if we are the only ones there. We stay away from the lifeguard area because that's where everyone goes.

I enjoy the mountains too (up in Sussex County, NJ, which some of you may not think of as "mountains," but "hills." Anyway to me, they are mountains. The lakes are beautiful, but very buggy, and I don't like the idea of mosquitoes and ticks. My brother is a fisherman, so he likes the mountains better than the shore. Not the rest of us.

But nothing is like the Jersey shore to me, I have nowhere I'd rather be. My daughter made chicken breasts marinated in balsamic vinaigrette on the grill, and pepper, pineapple, cherry tomatoes, mushrooms shish kebab for dinner. We left pretty late, so we saw the sunset over the bay on our way home, which is always gorgeous.

Days like that are few and far between for me these days, so I luxuriate in them whenever I get a chance to go.
