I'm 70 and am not fond of whole body, face, neck, and hand tats. I also don't judge others. It's not my decision and may not be my style but who cares? Life isn't all about me.

People have a right to like or dislike tattoos, that is very fair, but when there are people saying that they are ugly and gross and just judging people for getting a tattoo isn’t exactly nice. We all have to respect another person’s right to do what they want to do with their own body or just anything in general. We may not always agree, but that’s okay. I may not like face tattoos or ever get a tattoo, to chicken 😂, but I respect the person who does get one for whatever reason they choose to get one.

I have six tattoos. The smaller ones, or any tattoo that takes less than an hour, don't really hurt that much. The larger, more detailed and lenghty ones get painful after a while. In my opinion, it feels like taking a razor blade and scrapping the skin of a sunburned area. Not pleasant.

Black ink is less painful than colored tattoos. More needles are required for colored ink, so the sensation on your skin is different and, hence, more painful.

And, of course, tattoo placement matters too. A tattoo on your inner arm or wrist is no where near as painful as one on your foot or ankle. I can't even imagine what a face tattoo must feel like!

My tattoos varied in price. My smallest was $175, my largest was $350 (about 2 1/2 hours of detailed work, but not a big tattoo).

I usually tip about 30 percent because I think my artist deserves it.

All of my tattoos are deeply meaningful to me and a lot of thought went into them. None were impulse purchases. I wear them proudly.

Personally, I'm not a fan of them and don't have any. However, I agree that it's an individual choice and that person has to live with their choice(s)...not me.

However, if you're going to get one, go to a person who is a skilled artist. The majority of those I see look like they were done by a 4 year old as they appear ashy, chalky or blurry w/out sharp, defined lines. Most times, I see them and just shake my head at the poor quality of the tattoo.

Personally, I would never do it. I don't find them attractive or appealing but that's JMO. I don't care what others do. None of my business.

I know several people with small tattoos. A few teaching colleagues had them on wrists or ankles. A guy who played guitar in the choir back in the 80s and 90s had several large tatoos on his arms. I try not to judge people based on appearances.

I currently have two tattoos. One was done many years ago and the other just seven weeks ago. The first was a pretty cross on my ankle but I chose the little space behind my ear for the second because my arm skin isn't as good as it once was, it's thinner, crepey, and looser now. In that little space behind my ear I have a kidney cancer ribbon with a partial heart. Both tattoos are meaningful to me; one because it's a symbol of my faith and the second because I'm forever grateful that I am a kidney cancer survivor. Both were done with my DD getting something in a similar theme on the same day. She and her husband have lots of body art and it doesn't affect my opinion of them in the least. In fact when we got our kidney tats hers was sizeable, about 4"x3", or so, on her forearm, and she said she was honored to have it.

I may get one or two more. I'm thinking a small flower or heart behind my other ear and something to honor my dog who we had to say goodbye to recently. I'm trying to settle on the placement for that one.

For the record, I am very strong and unwavering in my religious beliefs, and quite conservative in my political leanings and the way I dress.

The judgments here really make me SMH

There are arguments for and against. Personally, I wouldn't get one.

I have a daughter who got one in her early 50's...
It's a small one on the inside of her left wrist. It's a Dove and she told me she chose it because it reminded her of me.
She knows I love birds....especially Doves...I have never said a thing to her
and I did appreciate the sentiment.

To be honest, I don't like the looks of any
thing so "great big" that that is the first thing you see. I also don't think they are very attractive. That is just my honest opinion for myself. I realize I don't have the right to judge but I can judge for myself my likes and dislikes.

@jubilant Well that was sweet of your daughter to get one that reminded her of you. Hopefully (for your liking) she stopped at one. I will say that MOST people that I know, actually, ALL that I know, never stop at one tattoo. They just keep getting more and more. I absolutely do not see the appeal. As I stated before, I have nieces who have them. One of these girls is particularly beautiful, and in my opinion, she ruined that.
