The airlines are totally at fault. They are jamming people in like cattle to the slaughter house. Either lock the seats so they can't recline, put more space in between so they can, or stop people like the idiot smacking on her seat.

The function is provided, it ought to be usable. The passenger shouldn't be put in the place of having to request permission to do what the seat is designed to do. Other passengers shouldn't be even further crammed in because someone decides to use the function provided.

The airlines need to fix this.

Re: To Recline Or Not?

[ Edited ]

@SuhseK   If you think four years olds are not sophisticated enough to kick the back of a seat to bother somone on purpose, you haven't been around many four year olds.

They are really smart.  Ever see one use an IPad or pay a game on a device?

Within this past week, a five year old woke up to find a fire in his bedroom. He got his two year old sister and the dog and himself out of the bedroom window and went around the house and up the outside stairs to wake his uncle up. The uncle woke up the adult members of the household.  Everyone got out safely.

I volunteer at a school and I am with 4 and 5 year old children often. They are not babies any more.  They know how to push buttons to get under somone skin and they know that adults can't do much about it.

@Lipstickdiva   Look!  It’s not like I’m the “keeper of the seats”...or how about this....it’s not like I give a rat’s ****** about this subject.

I will address this one more time....She had every right to move back.  He did not have the ‘right’ to hit the seat at all...period.

Nowhere does it say he’s allowed to hit her seat, but it does say she is ‘allowed’ to decline her seat.

You either follow the rules...or you don’t...period.

But in this atmosphere ...it seems to be OK to NOT follow the rules.

Phew!  This topic has been covered, smothered and ( in my opinion) put to bed.

Within this past week, close to where I live,  a five year old woke up to find a fire in his bedroom. ITA.  They are not oblivious to most of their own actions and have purpose in what they do because, if nothing else at that age, you know the things to do to get what you want.

Furthermore, there is no reason people could not begin teaching children at that age kindness, common courtesy, and manners.

My childhood was horrible but by the time we were small children we knew what not to do in the presence of others.   We knew about being polite and considerate.

@NicksmomESQ @Suziepeach  I sat next to a teacher living in Russia going home  to Arizona for his Grandfathers  funeral on a 6 hr. plus flights. A four year old was kicking his seat  off and on to get a rise out of this passenger next to me. He asked  the Mother three times, after first asking if they could speak and understand English to get him to stop. She told us meekly she did all she could under the conditions to get her boy to stop that he was  just bored etc. Then a remark was made about her lack of parenting. My neighbor was able to finally move after talking to the Flight Attendant.

I highly doubt, the 4 year old was kicking the seat, to, intentionally get a rise, out of the passenger.  That's beyond the sophistication level, of most 4 year olds.

Kids of that age, still, have the attention span, of a gnat! The child was probably bored, restless, on a long flight, and maybe even uncomfortable. Air pressure can cause ear problems, for adults, it can really be miserable, for young kids.

Of course, none of that, makes it less annoying, for the other passenger. Too bad, Mom didn't have more distractions, for the young traveler.

@SuhseK   The mother was asked 3 times to have her child stop.

She said she tried but he kept kicking.

He knew at that point that what he was doing was wrong, knew he could get away with it, and so did.

If you think a 4-year-old doesn't know right from wrong after being told what he is doing is wrong, think again.  Kids push buttons with the best of adults.

@Venezia, I just booked a flight on Southwest and was not able to choose a seat.  You still have to check-in 24 hours in advance and are assigned a boarding group (A, B, C) and you take what seat is there when you board.

I'm going to be on a cruise and won't be able to check-in until a couple hours before the flight.  We are going to be in the last boarding group and stuck in the back of the plane because it's already sold out.

@Lipstickdiva- Thanks for that info.  I avoid Southwest because of their policies about this, but some time ago I read that they were going to allow passengers to pay a fee to choose a seat prior to boarding.  Clearly it seems, it was never put into practice.

I wouldn't fly on an airline that wouldn't allow me to pre-select a seat, however low the fare.  Do you know if you get assigned to the first boarding group by paying a higher fare?  How do they decide who's in which group?

@Venezia @Lipstickdiva

on southwest you can pay a bit extra for early bird check in. it almost always guarantees you an A boarding number and the seat choices are plentiful. i always do early bird check in when flying southwest because it pretty much takes care of the check in process for you online automatically.

What she said!!!! It is on the airline to not herd it's passengers in like cattle and cram them in like sardines for the exorbitant prices they charge.

@sunshine45, I was just scanning to see if someone already responded.  LOL

I've only flown Southwest once and was able to check-in at exactly 24 hours in advance and I did get in boarding Group A without paying for the early bird check-in.

I'm not flying with them until the beginning of May so I was going to look further into what I can do to check-in because I really don't want to have to check-in the morning we arrive back in Fort Lauderdale for our flight that morning.  I was going to see if my sister could check us in if I give her all my flight info.

@Lipstickdiva

that is the advantage of paying for the early bird check in.

you dont have to be on the internet 24 hours in advance to try to get an A spot.

it is automatically done for you. you can then at any time go in and print your boarding pass.

if you have someone to do it for you though you will save some money. Smiley Happy

If you have ever had to make a 6 hour flight in a cramped seat with someone's head in your lap you would totally understand.  I don't think his punching seat was right, but I understand his anger.  Seat recliner hos, and people who play their movies out loud for whole plane to hear, or yak loudly on phone.  I think they need  to put on a lock on recline, only let it tilt to a certain point. Especially in tight seats !!!  Omg, the seats going toward back of plane are narrower and tighter, and the last seat against restroom should be sold for half price.

they lock the seats in exit aisle.  Lock them passed a slight tilt.......or buy first class.  I did last Dec traveling from California to NY.  Best money spent in a long time.  It's so expensive but....oh my what a luxury.

i think the lady was a total selfish idiot.  Really, her attitude was the pits.  And saying  to pick a better seat is stupid too, IMO.  How do you pick a right seat on Southwest??? .  You get what the lottery gives you.  And even when there is an option to choose seats you don't often get what you want.  Less flights, more chance of totally booked flights. And what is going to stop a person ahead of you reclining all the way, even with a "good seat". Geesh, the poor guy couldn't even put his tray down to eat.  That's cruel.  Airlines need to buck up too.  People are becoming bolder, angrier, and so rude.  It was never like this a few years ago.  What's up with people.  Give people a break.  The golden rule is so needed in times like these.

What Airline has seats that go all the way back like a lazyboy?  I keep asking this but nobody is sharing this!  My experience is very different the seats will only recline about 3 inches...maybe some airlines go 5 or 6 inches??  I don't know...we almost always fly Delta and I have sat in 1st Class (which is great and you can recline some) and all the way in the back and on the wing area seats...but never is anyone's head in a strangers lap as I go by to get seated...I mean never have seen that!  LOL

I only saw a small clip of the video of this man with his fist pushing into the seat over and over....the woman's head was no where near his lap...not even close.  It looked like her seat went back a few inches which I get that his seat was against a wall so it was tight.  I get that but still that doesn't give you the right to push on the paying passanger's seat in front of you because you got a BAD seat.  It just stinks is all....it happens.

I have no idea about this lottery system mentioned either to get a seat....all I know is that I will never do that...I want to pick my seats or forget it.

This must be people trying to get the cheapest airfare possible??  If that is the case then he had to know that he could get a bad seat with a toss up system like that.  Sounds awful no thanks.
