What I have never understood is why Harper Lee never wrote another novel after the astounding TKAM. There were many rumors, most which didn't make a lot of sense, as to whether she really wrote it. Some say it was really written by Truman Capote, who was the inspiration for the Dill character. But why wouldn't Truman have just put his own name on it? It's a puzzler. I'll give this new one a try, though. TKAM is one of the most beautifully written books I've ever read.

Capote was too egotistical to have written it & let Ms. Lee take all the credit & awards. Additionally, from what I've read about it, their friendship was never the same again after she won the Pulitzer in 1961. He was supposedly very jealous over that.

I've read that too, but it still doesn't answer the question as to why she only published one book and then never wrote another thing.

You/we don't "need" to know the reason(s) why. It's none of anybody's business.

Ah yet another snotty, scolding response on the Q boards today. I must not be living right.

Re: To Kill a Mockingbird fans

Don't people also wonder why Margaret Mitchell never published another novel after "Gone With the Wind"? From what I've read about Mitchell the process of producing a novel was arduous and painful and writers' block can often occur. Fran Leibowitz still has a book pending after many years, which I'm looking forward to reading.

Read "I am Scout". Also read "Scout, Atticus and Boo".

Actually, I read another book written by Margaret Mitchell (a "find"); it was not good. That's why I'm leery of this new book by Lee being released.

Re: To Kill a Mockingbird fans

JD Salinger wrote a few smaller works besides Catcher in the Rye, but Catcher was his one great American novel. After that he just sort of faded away. I often wonder if other works will be found hidden away somewhere. There is always the possibility with some of these one book writers that one great one is all they have in them.

Re: To Kill a Mockingbird fans

About the other Margaret Mitchell book-this was pre-GWTW? I am almost certain that I've read she never wrote again after that.
