Re: To Bathe or Not to Bathe: That is the Question

[ Edited ]

I really don't know if I'm imagining this, or overheard my parents talking about the olden days, etc.

I more or less recall taking a weekly (or maybe every other day or every two days) bath?  Was it when I was a youngster?  Or older?

Anyone here recall the same?

Or Maybe It's Just My Imagination (song, The Temptations).

'More or less', 'Right or wrong', 'In general', and 'Just thinking out loud ' (as usual).

Aren't they so Avant-garde? Sort of like when Jennifer Aniston was telling us to take 3 minute showers to save water. Looking  at her mane, I would doubt that she spends 3 minutes in the shower. Well then, she lost any credibility with me when she went and did the commercial for Emirate Airlines, showing  her coming out of a shower they have on board for their passengers, and clinking a champagne cocktail. HA!  They're so full of themselves. Keep your stinky ass over there and I'll jump in the shower with my Philosophy Shower Gel!

It takes me more 3 minutes just to get my hair wet.  Never mind how long it takes to rinse the shampoo and conditioner out!

@gertrudecloset @Trinity11 I had been having skin issues (itchy, burning, red) for quite awhile so went to a new dermatologist who said that many soaps can be too much for one to wash with daily & especially for young people.  I was surprised that she said to clean private parts daily if needed but otherwise showers every other day or even less often depending on what's needed.

@colleena  I've just read something that indicates the "science" behind this approach to bathing gives credibility to the notion that you don't need soap every day.  This is all personal choice imo.

Re: To Bathe or Not to Bathe: That is the Question

[ Edited ]

I just read an article on Web MD last week about bathing and how often one should bathe. It was interesting because they said not every day is necessary! However if you sweat during the night and really feel you need a quick morning shower then fine, but it wasn't necessary to shower daily.

Sorry, but I don't feel right until after I have showered, every single morning! I can understand small kids not given a full bath every night unless they are really dirty, especially in the winter months, but I believe good hygiene habits are a "must" and should be taught at an early age! I do think you need to be careful about the soap that you use though, because a lot of them are very drying!!!!!

Re: To Bathe or Not to Bathe: That is the Question

What are the health impacts of showering (or bathing) every day?

Normal, healthy skin maintains a layer of oil and a balance of “good” bacteria and other microorganisms. Washing and scrubbing removes these, especially if the water is hot. As a result:

  • Skin may become dry, irritated, or itchy.
  • Dry, cracked skin may allow bacteria and allergens to breach the barrier skin is supposed to provide, allowing skin infections and allergic reactions to occur.
  • Antibacterial soaps can actually kill off normal bacteria. This upsets the balance of microorganisms on the skin and encourages the emergence of hardier, less friendly organisms that are more resistant to antibiotics.
  • Our immune systems need a certain amount of stimulation by normal microorganisms, dirt, and other environmental exposures in order to create protective antibodies and “immune memory.” This is one reason why some pediatricians and dermatologists recommend against daily baths for kids. Frequent baths or showers throughout a lifetime may reduce the ability of the immune system to do its job.

And there could be other reasons to lose your enthusiasm for the daily shower: some people suggest that the water with which we clean ourselves may contain salts, heavy metals, chlorine, fluoride, pesticides, and other chemicals. These may cause problems, too.

Neither do I.  It's not about the celebrities, it's about what the subject matter at hand.  You can't differentiate between the two?  There are non celebrities who agree with this premise.  Geez  @Jersey Born

She probably goes to a hair dresser and has her hair done on their water bill.  Who cares anyway.

I am extremely sensitive. One expert suggested only using soap on the truck of the body. That's where the stinky parts are. He said arms and legs don't need soap and that they are made drier by soaps.

Re: To Bathe or Not to Bathe: That is the Question

@ROMARY

I can remember baths in the galvanized washtub at 4 years old when we lived in the basement of our house.   Mom would set the tub in front of the wood stove, heat water in big pots and pour into the tub for me to bathe.   She would lay the oven door down and set the towel on it to warm while I washed off.   There was always warm water waiting to rinse me off when I was ready to get out.

When I started school, I bathed in the tub on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday nights; the other nights were wash off nights.

Since we had a well, my parents were very cautious about our water usage, and all 5 of us never bathed on the same night.

They're not worth making a stink over.
