Re: Tipping at the self checkout?

I ordered pizza online last night for DH to pickup on his way home. At the end of checkout it had where you could tip the team that made our pizza? I thought they got paid an hourly wage to do their job? We pick it up so we don't have to pay the tip plus delivery fee which makes a pizza a ridiculous price we just will not pay? Not paying $25 or more for 1 large pizza.

No, I am not even leaving a penny.

We should be getting a discount for ringing up the order and bagging.

What's next, paying for plastic bags.

@threecees - That's pretty common already.  Many states have passed laws banning "single-use" plastic bags.  If you want one, or even a paper bag, you have to pay for it.

It's an environmental move to reduce the pollution of plastic world-wide.  It's pretty standard, where I am, to bring your own reuseable bags, whenever you shop.

Re: Tipping at the self checkout?

I always use self checkouts and NO tippig issue here.

Maybe our area hasn't gotten it yet...but it would be a huge NO.

I don't tip machines....or fully paid employees that hand me a cup of coffee out a window.

Under salaried servers YES!

@Venezia I think threecees was being sarcastic regarding the bags. Some people oppose efforts to clean up the environment.

When you use the self checkout at a store, do you check a tip amount when it comes up on the screen? I was appalled to think I am expected to tip a checkout computer when no one has helped me...I have helped myself!

@Trailrun23

Haven't seen that.  Who actually gets that tip?

@chessylady - Thanks, I didn't know that.  Personally, I'm all for it!

Re: Tipping at the self checkout?

It will be a cold day in hades before I tip at the self check out.  I tip when eating in a restaurant and most of the time when I get a hair cut...that is it.

That is understandable.  It's a tip for the people made the pizza.  Like when you tip in any other restaurant.  I've seen tip jars in pizza and sub shops.  I'm ok with that.

Re: Tipping at the self checkout?

Remember when you tipped wait staff because they were making $2.03 an hour?

Now we're constantly asked to tip people making $15+ an hour.

One of our favorite casual restaurants just started the tip at the register. Not only did they raise their prices significantly, you order at the counter, pick up at the counter and bus your own table. Waaaaa?
