How can a car be speeding in Times Square?

I always thought traffic was so grid-locked,

it moved at a snail's pace.

NY is not always gridlocked. It is much better than it used to be. The city does it best to keep traffic moving. It does get very bad when something happens though.

@January121  I haven't heard that yet but it wouldn't surprise me. We'll find out for sure 24 hours from now. No matter the reason, it should NEVER have happened.  My thoughts and prayers for peace go out to all those hurt by this scum.

@sidsmom, two factors:  NYC has been (and is still) creating various types of "traffic calming" zones in all five boroughs to cut down on pedestrian deaths.  These zones usually detour or funnel traffic to other areas to decrease congestion and gridlock.

Second, the car was going the wrong way, northbound on a southbound street, jumped the curb and onto the sidewalk hitting pedestrians.  It was just about noontime, and as odd as it may sound, NYC is a "12:30 pm" lunch town (from personal experience of 40+ years of working in Manhattan).  More workers go to lunch at 12:30 and 1:00 pm than at noon.  This also cut down the number of people on the streets at the time of the accident.  If it had been a half hour later, there would have been more injuries and possible deaths.

Preliminary tests on Rojas produced a 0.0 alcohol level according to our local NYC news. They are proceeding with additional tests as they said it is clear he was under the influence of something.

As of the latest report, 22 injured and one fatality, an 18-year-old visiting from Michigan. She was walking with her 13-year-old sister. Her sister is in the hospital and will recover.

Terrorism has been ruled out so far as the motive.

What a tragedy! Prayers for the family. :-(

Did they rule out terrorism?  I read they were searching his home.  It was also alleged he was beating pedestrians after he left his car until a bouncer caught him and landed a punch to his face.  I saw one headline that said he was trying to commit suicide by cop.

I think he had a suspended license.  That means little since many people drive without a valid license or insurance.

This beautiful, sweet young woman went to school with my nieces in Michigan. She was enjoying sightseeingthat and was run down tragically.  Heartbroken for her&her family.

We had a drunk driver take out an entire family last weekend on a busy four lane highway Northwest of Albuquerque.  Plowed head on into parents and two toddlers killing everybody including himself.  Others in the drunk's car said they had been drinking plus the scene was littered with beer cans.  They could be charged under state law because they didn't stop the drunk from driving.

Yes @Kachina624 that family was from Aztec,NM...such a senseless loss.  It's been in the Durango paper for the past few days...DW

@sidsmom  He was on the sidewalk for 2-3 blocks.  Any speed on a sidewalk is too fast for a car.

I saw on the television the photos of him after the car rolled over and he got out.   Witnesses say he was grunting and growling and appearing threatening.

On the news today, it was said that the driver was in the U.S. Navy, and had been hearing voices.
