BTW I do want to apologize again if I offended anyone.

I wasn't trying to start anything; I sincerely thought that was a violation of the board rules.

I don't want to upset or offend anyone here. I spend a lot of time here and I don't want and will not argue with anyone, that isn't what I'm here for.

How can I take anonymous posts by angry people or bullies seriously? They must have sad lives if they need to vent herd or to feel better by denigrating others. My advice to you is to take a step back and not let yourself get too involved or upset. Choose to hang out with the nice people and ignore the nasty, no doubt lonely ones!

@libbyannE  Your advice is good; however, my distress is not felt personally.  I have this personality quirk whereby I need to respect someone before their opinion matters to me.  I've been called a snob for it, but will not repeat myself at to why it is of no concern for me.  Woman Happy

What does concern me, however, is how I've come to view our society as a whole.  I believe there are a lot of good and intelligent people "out there," but I also fear there might be a nearly equal number of not-so good or bright among us.  This subject matter of Internet bullying and trolling demonstrates how easily crowd mentality spreads.  The idea frightens me for our future.

While I did not read the article cited, I did see an interview on the subject with a woman who was an editor at Time.  She has been viciously attacked online, and her children threatened with rape.  Evidently, some people feel that women are attacked in such ways online more frequently than men.  I have no idea what the Time article concluded on this issue.

There are a few people on a site such as ours who seem to be consistently belittling of others.  Maybe nails for breakfast?  We can agree to disagree about any topic without it getting personal or ugly.  And if it doesn't bother someone, well that's not exactly a bragging point.  I can't "brush off" unacceptable behavior, whether it's directed at me or someone else.  Comments that are unkind are bothersome to me.  Not why I come here.

I hear you. Fear for the future if vile talk becomes the norm? Scary. You are so right.

Whatever.  It is what it is, trolls and people who just say things we don't like or say things in manner that we don't like are not going anywhere....ever.   Entering the world of social media is CHOICE, if it's too hot handle, exit that world.  Life will still go on for you.  As for QVC, what board are you on?  There's no shortage of Trolls on this board.  It's not big problem because no real conversation is allowed but that's not a good thing because no genuine discussion or exchange of ideas is allowed.  Ok....other than LOGO and SG bashing.  The article is just a bunch of whining about something that can't be changed.

I totally agree that the trolls ruin the chance at a great conversation, but I actually prefer lively back and forth bantering.  FB is ok, but I agree there are some sites that are actually so trashy I avoid them.  While I don't like censoring, I certainly don't like wasting my time reading total ignorance.

I like the back and forth conversation, but the trolls can be too much sometimes. This happens on my local newspaper site. I also enjoy Twitter. The news moves fast, and you can cover a lot of topics in a short time.

I disagree with you on everything you wrote and find your mindset to be part of the problem. SMH

I think the way trolls attack public figures on the Internet is terrible.  Whenever there's a story about a celebrity, the comments are brutal.  They must have very thick skins, or maybe they're laughing all the way to the bank.  I know I would be.  We see that kind of thing about hosts from time to time on this board.

As for arguing about politics and current events, I like a good debate, including humiliating people who troll me and are shown to not know what they're talking about.  I don't strike first, but "I'm a counter-puncher."  If you're going to call me stupid and if you're actually not as smart as me, expect to pay the price.  No mercy.
