Cool, I guess I'm annoyed that my thread about abused co-workers went all the way crazy, people were sharing some pretty important stuff but some just can't help themselves.

The thread about Opiates went too, it think it started to get finger pointy towards the end. I dislike to see important subjects turn into petty fights, there was some good info on that subject. Kind of sad

I seem to see "Thread has run its course" when there are pages of posts repeating the same thing, over and over, the same back and forth between posters, over and over, the same arguments, over and over. I think the moderator's call is useful in those instances.

Regarding "pile-ons"..... I saw a couple of very recent pile-ons that made me very sad. I call it a pile-on because it's not simply 99.9% of posters expressing their differing opinion but, in doing so, they berate the other poster. One person makes a belittling comment... and many others follow along. It's one thing to state an opposing opinion -- it's another thing to "pack together" with berating remarks to a poster.

I noticed a thread was gone yesterday, a certain person kept insisting on making her thoughts known,and would not stop.

When you lose some one you L~O~V~E, that Memory of them, becomes a TREASURE.

In those cases, I wish there was a limit on how many times a poster can reply to the same topic. I know it sounds crazy but if I knew I could only comment say 4 times, I would choice my words wisely. Nobody wants to read the same thing being beat into the ground with quote after quote.

And not every subject needs a winner.

I've seen the comment many times. Sometimes no standards have been violated, no arguments. It appears to me sometimes it's the opinion of the mod that everything to be said has been said and thus it was time to close it.

I don't like this as it seems purely arbitrary.

Reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where George is upset because his girlfriend wants to "change the subject". He and Jerry decide the "subject should resolve itself based it's own momentum", LOL. Love that show!

Btw, I agree completely that if a thread is respectful of the standards the moderators should not close it. The other day a particular mod went crazy closing any interesting thereads willy-nilly. No wonder this place can be snoozeville lately.

And some posters will never recognize that about themselves, and some are proud of it and revel in it; either way, it's those posters who are often the true cause of a thread ending up closed for commenting. "Run its course" is a PC way to say okay, now that nothing meaningful is being said and the thread has descended to petty bickering, the original point or benefit is lost.

I don't have any problem with a thread being Closed For Commenting (vs being poofed). The thread and its posts are still there for all to see - the good with the bad. I think everyone can decide for themselves who's right and who's wrong, who's obnoxious, and whose "side" they're on. And everyone's going to have different opinions on that.

But closing a thread to commenting means no more t*t-for-t*t, pisthy comments - it can't race down Insult Alley any more. I get that. I'm sometimes sorry that a given thread doesn't continue, and like everyone else wish it hadn't had to be that way. But I also realize that there were posters who had already determined how the thread would go, and if the thread were to continue it would just be more insults between posters, not discussion of a topic. So yes, IMO "run its course" is a very apropos phrase much of the time.
