Re: This is why you're charged for paper statements...

I don't understand how a 30-something would not know how to Google "how to address an envelope", but I am glad that you were there to help! "parenting" never ends!

I don't believe it either.  There are too many benchmark tests.

This is what happens when everything is automated.  Schools are not teaching cursive writing anymore.  I doubt most young people could use a landline.  Remember when he had all of our friends phone numbers in our heads.  Progress is ok but old school ways should still be taught.  You hear on the news a lot about personal data being breached yet some people want to put more and more on line.  Even storing passwords on line someplace  I don't get it.  Pen and paper  are still a good thing.  I really hate being forced to do stuff on line.  I do not bank on line at least there is still a choice lol.  I know this sounds old school but it is who I am lol.  I use cash more than my debit card due to skimmers being placed in card machines yikes.  And yes I use a paper calendar lol

Thanks to caller ID prank telephone calls are a thing of the past.  People can no longer call and ask if your refrigerator is running.

When we rented an apartment a few years ago, the leasing agent was impressed we knew how to write out a check.  He said the younger people have no clue.  So as far fetched as it sounds, I believe the OP.  I'm surprised they even know how to write (print??) since everything is done with their thumb on their phone--LOL!!!!

This reminds me that I wrote something in cursive and I was at the counter at my job at that time.  More than one young adult said what is that, that is so cool omg I was shocked.  They didn't know cursive.  Some kids cannot read cursive.  I was talking to another lady a few days ago and said that when she writes cursive little girls call it princess writing.  I thought this was cute.

Many things in life are not taught.  They really learned through experience or by seeing what others do.

I would think everyone has seen a fully addressed envelope....hundreds of them.  This is not a skill that needs a teacher, like driving a car or reading or math.

It's amazing how these youngsters can figure out how to use electronics ...cell phone, computers, iPads, etc, but have no clue how to do every day tasks that they have observed for years.

I would be embarassed if my children/grandkids were so clueless.

Of course they can figure out things THEY do every day. Most young adults entering the workforce have never received or posted a piece of mail. They work with handheld computers every single day, they probably wouldn't dream of asking someone how to download an app or modify quick text responses. They don't tremble at scam calls and rage about paperless billing--all recent topics on this forum.

I would be embarassed if my children had to perform a job-related task and failed to ask how to do it.

People figure out things they have never done before everyday.

Some things are just common sense.  I would say if anyone can't figure out how to put an address on an envelope, they are just plain stupid.

You can always Google something if you can't figure it out.  I put a new battery in my ipad.  No one taught me,  I watched a YouTube video.

That was more difficult than addressing an envelope.

There is no benchmark.  In school they are not taught the basic record keeping stuff.  I learned to address envelopes when I was a kid helping with Christmas cards.  In the 60's your household would receive tons of Christmas cards.  In southern Calif we had two mail deliveries during the holidays.  We would address cards to friends as soon as we received one.

When I was in high school in the dark ages there was more of an emphasis on business writing, typing, etc.  We learned how to type a business letter, type an envelope and a memo.  Sadly today there is a high emphasis on AP courses that many students are not learning the basics of writing.

Oh my goodness !!!   Well I've heard everything !  At 73 I didn't know something like that was possible !  I also found out recently that my grandson's school ( he's going into the 3rd grade next school session starting in August)  will no longer teach cursive writing ! How are these young people going to sign their name to important documents as they become adults ? Buying a home etc ? Will printing out their name vs writing be exceptable ?

@Goodie2shoes this is a big misconception on these boards. Your signature does not have to be in cursive. You can "sign" all of the documents you mentioned in print if that is your signature.

[ Edited ]

Printing your name is 100% acceptable in virtually all current circumstances.  I have "signed" multiple legal documents in recent years electronically.

A cursive signature is nice and cute and quaint, but not necessary.
