Fitness training.

But it's not enough to pay the mortgage!

And clients come and go and you never know what you're going to bring in.

I have to come up with a PLAN.

Plan to be a better trainer.

Unless your area is saturated with trainers or your services aren't needed in your area, there's no reason you can't stay busy. If there ARE a lot of trainers in your area, you need to get a rep for being the best.

Well, for one, I'm a very good coach (I prefer that term to trainer, which I reserve for animals). But I have not thrown myself into it the way I need to in order to make a real go of it. And there ARE a lot of "trainers" in this city. Lots of competition. But then it depends on what sort of "training" a client is looking for. "Boot Camp" and CrossFit type workouts are very popular now, but they're not my thing. I've been working with a friend who is helping me brand myself. I have a different approach than many others around town. And I am considering a specialized certification for an older population, a group I have not had much contact with in a coaching setting. A few people I know in the health and fitness field are starting to talk about joining forces to go in on a facility that focuses on all aspects of health and wellness. Places like that are cropping up more and more around here (and I know they've been popular in other areas for many years).

It's pretty easy to get a gig in a gym, but you make peanuts there. And I have not been impressed with the kind of "training" people get in your average gym. Some of the things I see make me cringe.

So, I'm in the midst of figuring out how I want to proceed.

Well, my advice is, if you really love what you do, just keep focusing on it and working on making it happen. And be open to any ideas or opportunities that come along while you're doing that. In my life, all of my "careers" have come about while I was working on something else. Three years ago I.would not have told you that I would be living where I am, and doing the job I'm doing.

Thanks, Marie. I lost focus a few years ago when I had an injury and then became ill. After recovery, it took me quite awhile to get back to where I am (I'm not so young anymore!!!). I know in my heart I have a lot to offer and want to do it "my way" (because it's what I believe in!!).

I hope you're happy with where you are now and what you're doing. I suspect you are!!!

Congrats Smile

Life is just a series of chapters and we have to keep moving forward. I sense from your posts that you are energetic and have a positive energy. I think you can be successful at whatever you put your hand to. Maybe the issue now is that you are looking for something you think you "should" do instead of what is inspiring to you. Of course, I know the bills have to be paid! But if being a fitness coach is your calling, keep the majority of your energy on that. Do whatever (entry level) you have to.do for now, then leave yourself time to.focus on your dream job. Keep positive thoughts always. Relax and let the ideas come to you. Forget about themes like the economy, age, etc. Remember Joan Rivers. Did she subscribe to.those societal parameters? I'm sorry to hear about your injury and illness. It was a setback, I know. But you can move forward now! Smiley Happy I think you will find what you are looking for.

Your words ring so true, Marie. Thank you for sharing them with me.

In the last few days I have thought how life is always bringing the unexpected, throwing a curve, daring you to live in THE PRESENT.

I never considered that Joan Rivers would be a teacher when I was looking for one.

I am actually quite proud of myself for not giving up after the injury and illness. I did not just throw in the towel and say "well, I'm getting older, maybe I should just act my age".

AS IF!!!! {#emotions_dlg.laugh}

When people say they are "in the healthcare field" what does that mean? Are you working at the professional level? or are you a tech? For instance -- a pharmacy tech is not going to make the money or advance in their job as a pharmacist would. A CNA is not going to make the money or advance in their job as an RN would, same in almost every department. So - I find statements like "i work in the healthcare field" to be pretty misleading. You can be a typist who transcribes dictation in medical records and , technically, you work "in the healthcare field" - though there is not a lot of room for advancement in that area, past becoming the department manager when the one who is already there leaves. Whereas professional staff always can be upwardly mobile if they work on it.

I rarely agree with HH, but she has a valid point in this case.
