I cringe when I hear that term too.  It sounds so stupid.  My first choice would be suspect, or at least subject.

One of the most egregious examples of faulty and stupid word choice.  And, something that is so often used by broadcasters.  

Wonder what their style guide suggests.

They aren't ladies either. Two young girls badly beat a pizza driver in my area. The news caster called them young ladies

 

Not so you would notice, I thought.  They are female monsters in my book, and should not be given the title of a young lady

Perps aren't 'gentle'.  Imo.  Also, why not call a gentle woman a 'gentlewoman'?
