Years ago, one of our neighbors put some cute casement windows on her trash. We saw them and took them home. Before we could decide where to use them, she came around going from house to house to find them. In less than a month, we had them, kept them and lost them. Don't put stuff out you want to keep 
I think the OP story's from a joke book so it's funny and maybe a take on how people might act but not a real story?
