Haha! I agree and have thought of a few names that were for Gen-Xer girls that were wildly popular then fell out of fashion. They're next in line after Boomer names like mine.

My name was never popular from the little research I have done.

My full name is not really used and was not even common when I was born. It's a version of my mother's name because my parents (who were 45 when I was born ) were so sure they were having a boy after 2 girls (aged 16 and 10 at the time) they didn't have a girl's name picked out. 😹
So my 16 year old sister suggested my name and that I be named after my mother.
There is a 3rd version of my name that is popular now. Since I go by the shortened version of my name in most cases, it doesn't really give my age away right off the bat.

Love your name story! My mother told me that she liked the name Cheryl when it was in the news about Lana Turner's daughter named Cheryl who killed Lana's boyfriend while he was attacking her.

My name was in the top five most popular girl names for the 1950's. It doesn't even make the top 100 most popular girl names for 2024. My last name is so common that my bank has at least 25 other people with my name in their database. Before there were cell phones (back in the Stone Age), I got a phone call from a private investigator looking for someone with my name but the person he was looking for was much older than me.

@lynnie61 wrote:I don't think your name sounds old at all. All of our names from the 50's and 60's no one names their kids our names. Not sure where they get some of these names today. Some are pretty and some are pretty awful.
Whether pretty or awful the unconventional spellings are what throws me. For example, do the accent/syllable points in the word change or are they pronounced in the conventional way.

My name is Diane... I really thought that when Princess Diana was popular, it would make the name popular again but it didn't....now it's also an old lady name.
ETA: I like the name Cheryl! There is a woman who lives on my street and her name is Cheryl too. she's about ten years younger than me and is very youthful looking...I don't think of her as old but I know what you mean.
So many really old fashioned names are popular today. Hannah is one of those names. If my great aunt Hannah were alive today she would be 125 years old! ![]()
Another name that I can't see coming back but was fairly popular enough in the 1920s was Gertrude! My mother's name and she never liked it!

I do not have a common name. When I was going to school there were only two other girls who had my name. I could never find any mementos in stores like cups, keychains, plaques with my name.

Having a name that is uncommon is so special ! When I was a kid I used to sometimes wish for a unique name.
