Theft last night

[ Edited ]

All of the tires were stolen off of one of our neighbors brand new cars last night.. Boy theives will steal anywhere under any circumstances. Its a development out in the country with homes up and down the block. And I know crime happens everywhere, but the car was parked "where the street lamp shines bright" But that didnt stop them.

I went to bed at 1, BUT I have insomnia and was awake in bed yet around 2, and heard car doors and didn't look out. (Having been from the city originally, I usually do look out if I hear any loud noises). So I feel bad, because had I looked out the window Id have seen them and called the police.

Also I leave a light on (inside) in the front room of the house downstairs at night ever since cars were broken into the other year here because I figured the light on would deter crime. I guess not!

Anyway, I told the neighbor what time I heard noises and someone has a camera on their house, so I hope and pray they catch the thieves! And from now on I will be more diligent when I hear something! (yes like Mrs Kravitz on Bewitched! :-)

Steal the tires but not the entire car??  Sounds like they may have been after the rims first, the tires maybe second.  Sorry to hear.

I suspect the OP of this thread meant "wheels and tires". Tires are not an easy task to remove from any wheel or rim. Certain vehicles have wheels with tires that are worth thousands of $$$. Many do steal the whole vehicle, but abandon it after removing the above mentioned. Plus, if caught, they would not be charged with "theft of a motor vehicle".

After a few incidents this spring, our neighborhood association urged residents to leave outdoor lights on at night.  Meanwhile, I read that doing so does very little to deter theft and vandalism.  But I suppose it doesn't hurt, right?  I haven't left the front porch light on however because it'll attract undesirable bugs to the gardens.

Wouldn't removing 4 tires and rims take some know how and some time?

I had this happen to me about 30 years ago.  Mustang.  Stole the wheels, tires, hubcaps on the back of the car. I lived in Washington, D.C.   At the time, I really was not making much money so was a big worry for me.  The police hunched that it was probalby someone that needed new wheels for their car and just stole them.  Going forward, I had locking lug nuts installed.  I live on the west coast now.  Had a variation of this happen to a friend of mine that was visiting.  I live in the city and only have 2 garage spaces.  Someone loosened the lug nuts of his front wheels.  He was driving and had terrible shaking and went straight to a garage.  The mechanic told him it was done on purpose.  Said that there had been this type of vandalism on my block, against Air BnB customers. I do not run an Air BnB, but am quite aware of many that do on this street.  Bottom line.  If possible, get lug nuts that LOCK.  There are some creepers out there.

Knowledge on how to remove a tire, a laid out plan and two people. A pick up truck or SUV, some concrete blocks, a power lug nut wrench and a hydraulic floor jack.  Probably no more than 10-15 minutes, unless there were locking nuts. Probably most of these low lifes know how to get around them easily.

Close to 40 years ago my brother had the same thing happen.  Had his 67 GTO parked outside the autobody shop of a friend.  Small community here and brother had a lot of buddies.  He located his wheels.  Drove to kid's house and comfronted him, told him unless he relinquished the wheels he was calling the police.

Father of kid came out of the house and started giving my brother a hard time.  My brother had the inside of the wheels engraved with identifying information, so he told the kid's father to go check them.

Well guess what, the father told his son to "get those wheels off that car and be thankful he isn't going to call the cops"

They were looking for the rims more than likely - I would bet this wasn't their first time around either!

It really doesn't take much to steal a car or parts. Years ago they would hot wire the car (pretty quick) - today they pop the ignition and jam a screw driver in it - can be done in seconds.
