@151949

I don't know if it's just a Pittsburg Italian wedding tradition, but sounds wonderful.  Traditions like this are what make for the continuity of cultures.

My tradition is a Christmas cookie one and relative to some Austrian roots I have.  The tradition goes that one must bake 7 cookies to be served on Christmas Day to be blessed with good luck in the new year.

thanks @justmyopinion and @Noel7 for expanding on the "cookie table" tradition.....no wonder i have seen it around here a number of times since we share a border with pennsylvania AND we have a strong italian community here.

My daughter cheats at cookies.

It started when she was just too busy to cook or do any extras and she had to bring cookies for some work event.

She bought a bag of Betty Crocker chocolate chip cookie mix, made those but added A LOT of her own chocolate chips.

At work the next day, everyone said they were so good and asked for the recipe, lol.  She still gets asked to make more for people.  When I'm at Target, I load up on Betty Crocker for her.

I use Betty Crocker cookie mixes also and they produce an excellent cookie.  I purchase their chocolate chip and walnut mix whenever they are available and add a handful more walnuts.

Hi @Allegheny and @Noel7Smiley Happy

I agree with you both. The Betty Crocker mixes make really good cookies. Their Sugar Cookie mix is the best. That's another one that you can have fun with, adding extras to. Yummy!

Cookie tables are very popular here. The good bakers in the family make the cookies......you figure 5-6 cookies per person to decide how many to make. We even got little treat bags printed up for guests to take a few home..

I think the reason some venues won't allow them is NUT ALLERGIES.

In 2000 we attended a very fancy wedding in Monterey, CA.  The bride

was Italian-American with deep Italian roots in Monterey.

The wedding was lovely, and yes there was a cookie table.  It was absolutely

delightful and something unfamiliar to me.  We all enjoyed it so much.

Another tradition which was new to me was a very large Engagement Party,

almost as elaborate as the wedding reception.  At that beautiful affair,

there were boxes of candy on each table.

Attending both the Engagement party and the wedding were all four of the

bride's grandparents--all from Italy.

Now, that's impressive! I'm Italian from NJ and have never seen a cookie table (sounds like a great idea though). There are Viennese tables at weddings these days, but not when I was younger. What we did always have were platters of cookies (from a good Italian bakery - usually in Brooklyn) on each table. They were really beautiful with Jordan almonds and some shredded mylar-type stuff decorating them. My favorite were these little pastel colored candies with bits of cinnamon stick at the core. Have no idea what they were called and most people didn't eat them (which meant more for me, so that was a good thing). Haven't seen them in years. Most women kept a bag in their purses to take some cookies home.

I live in the Midwest, I have been to one big Italian wedding where they had three things at the reception, open bar, band, and the biggest cookie table in the world! It always seemed crazy to me not to serve food with all that alcohol but the cookies were out of this world. This was 30 years ago and I've never forgotten it.

Nataliesgramma, that is what we call a cookie table when we do a cookie table. The bridal couple are now deciding to have a candy table with so many different kinds of candies for the the guests to scoop out of large glass beautiful  containers(With A Large Long Handle Scooper) so that no one uses their hands. All of the pieces of candy are the kind that come wrapped . I have to say that some of the cookies that the families made and brought to the receptions have been some of the most beautiful made and decorated that they look like they were prize winners. A lot of the families have been very kind to share their recipes with us and yes I had to go to a specially  shop to get some of the ingredients( like pinnoli nuts). When I got married 55 years ago my Mom made almost all our different cookies, nut rolls, poppy seed rolls. etc. My Aunts also made all kinds of different cookies for our cookie table so the cookie table goes back many years.

SFNative I have never heard about the 7 cookie tradition for Christmas and the blessing. I wonder if a person makes more then the 7 choices if we can have more blessings? Nunya I still cannot really do those darn lady lock cookies that I am happy with. 151949 did you keep all your Moms favorite cookie and cake recipes? I have so many of my Moms cook books and and hand written recipes that she had from at least 1930.Also have some of my Aunts hand written recipes and my grandmothers.
