Re: The Shocking Call My Friend Got Today !

It seems to me that an attorney would send a letter via registered mail.  Or whatever it's called now-a-days.

Signature and date required upon receipt of the letter in person.

What if just about anyone had answered the phone call from the alleged attorney?  And that person had not relayed the information to the proper person.

Well, maybe things are done in different manners from state to state.

Regardless, I would look into this situation quite a bit more than what has been described here.

And, the very best of luck to the recipient(s) of this inheritance!

'More or less', 'Right or wrong', 'In general', and 'Just thinking out loud ' (as usual).

You are correct.  If it truly was a will situation, the contact would be very professional and froeverytm the attorney.  In my case a private investigator found me and provided me with a letter from the attorney asking me to call or contact the firm.  When I made contact, then I was told about the will.  I'm sure it's that way in every state.  At any rate, an inheritance doesn't mean money or anything of monetary value.

Not necessarily, I had to deal with a situation like this last year. I was the trustee of my aunts estate. I had to hire an attorney, and I had to provide the attorney with the contact information for them to reach out to contact the beneficiaries.

The OPs situation makes sense to me in the context you provided above.

You were responsible for getting the contact info. Obviously someone was looking for the contact info for the OPs friend, found her, reached out and will report back to the trustee so the attorney has at least some of her info to be able to send out the notification.

Sometimes an attorney will place a legal notice in local papers if they are looking for a beneficiary. Maybe someone saw it and contacted the OPs friend?

I found my best friend from childhood after 40 years, and several other neighbors & friends.  It's not hard to do using the internet.

Re: The Shocking Call My Friend Got Today !

The information you find "free" on the internet is far from accurate!

Googled my name and found out I live with 4 different guys at my address.  I live alone.  One of the guys mentioned is the person my ex-husband bought a house from in 2005!

Took me months to determine that much info.

My ex is in a Memory Care home and he is still listed as living at 2 different addresses.  Hasn't lived there in a couple of years.

Years ago the funeral homes put a death notice in the local newspaper.  Today, you can't find an obit online unless someone publishes an obit!

Re: The Shocking Call My Friend Got Today !

I've seen several comments about concern because it wasn't an attorney's office that contacted her friend - I would only say that if her friend passed on 10/6/2024, it is very unlikely the attorney who processed the will or the probate court would have contacted a beneficiary in this amount of time.  Hopefully, everything is, in fact, on the up and up.
