My grandfather was what used to be called a "customer peddler" in NYC. More or less a traveling salesman, but all his customers were in the Bronx with a few in Manhattan. This was from the 1940's to the late 1960's. He sold dry goods - sheets, towels, blankets, bedspreads, custom draperies and slipcovers. He had a route and regular customers. Most paid a little bit weekly until they were paid up. He must have done well as he and my grandmother managed to raise 3 sons and buy a house. Once my father and his brothers were old enough, they were sent on the rote to deliver merchandise and collect weekly payments.

I LOVE ❤️ your story!😊🌸. I just knew there must be other people in the US who had similar versions of this.  You're right about the sellers making a good income too.  Most of these locally owned stores I heard about built up very large customer bases.

Im so glad you shared this with us.  Thank you.💝🌸

Thanks for sharing these nostalgic photos, reminds me of a movie called 'A Walk on the Moon' with Liev Schreiber and Diane Lane who falls in love with a salesman who travels from one resort to another selling 'clothing' from his truck, I thought, how cool is that!  Have you seen this movie takes place in the late '60's.

You're quite welcome.  I was happy to find some images of the Rolling Store still in existence.❤️

I haven't watched that movie, but now I will look for it.  It sounds like something I'd love!  Thank you so much for your comments and suggestion.💝🌸

@lynnie61  I love your Sam the Milk Man story! He was such a dear heart to help your Mom when she hurt her back by bringing the milk in and putting it into the fridge for her! I laughed and smiled imagining you and your family at the table on Easter and sweet Sam waltzing in like he owns the place putting milk in the fridge- so cute Smiley Very HappyHeart. Your Mom's Ambrosia sounds absolutely delicious Heart- I'm glad I can make you remember her delicious dish! I'm going to make some more Ambrosia on Monday Smiley Happy

@NigelSparkles  Thank you for sharing your story about your grandfather and his custom peddler business! That's so wonderful that he did so well in his business and he created his own route and let the customers have "easy pay" until they paid off their merchandise.  He must've been very successful to raise three kids and buy a home- that's something to be very proud of! Thats so great that your father and uncle delivered merchandise and collected payments- sounds like a very good and hard working family and a great team throughout generations Smiley HappyHeart

Re: The ROLLING STORE

[ Edited ]

@cheriere  I love sweet things for breakfast Smiley Very Happy! I'm hungry too!  All our fun bologna talk made me walk to my favorite bargain grocery store (its one mile each way and I love long walks) and I got the things I needed and then walked home, only to realize that I forgot to buy bologna Smiley LOL.  I got a great deal on hot dogs though- three big packs of jumbo S-Bar brand hot dogs for $5 total.  I got a big pack of Ballpark hot dog buns with my coupons for $1.47 so last night was hot dog night Smiley Happy

Ooh, mallowcups!  We love those too and I totally forgot about those!  I love chocolate as well.  In fact, I hogged out and ate count them, 5 Reeces Easter Eggs last night!😃❤️

Reeses Easter Eggs! I cannot even have them in the house. The peanut/chocolate ratio is perfect! To me, the only peanut butter/chocolate candy that tops Reeses is Jason's White Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups.
