The Hamptons?

We will be spending a week in NYC later this month. I have already gotten lots of good suggestions on this board but an acquaintance suggested going to the Hamptons for a day or two. We will have a car so getting there should not be a problem but is it worth the trip? What is there to do there? It looks beautiful on television and we will have lots of free time but I wondered if anyone has suggestion on what to do there. Thanks!
