I am on the southern end of WV. Some years back the superintendent of schools in a nearby county found herself in hot water for not letting school out early enough once the snow started. The rural roads were snow covered and slick by the time school buses headed out and it was snowing heavily.
Buses filled with students were in ditches all over the county, many bus drivers had to take students back to their school because they couldn't complete their runs, and buses with second runs never made it back from their first runs. While the students were a major priority, every single school in the county had these problems, so it was after 10:30 that night before the last student was off the bus and with their parent! There were some very angry parents who tried their best to get a new superintendent after that disaster! She remained on the job, but closed school with the slightest bit of snow from then until she moved on.

@SaveTheTurtles wrote:Winter comes every year and along with it snow yet people act like they've never dealt with it before.
@SaveTheTurtles Many havent dealt with it often, many don't live where they get much, and many people who don't have friends and family to rely on or people who would be in need if they run out of things are of course worried and anxious.
My area is not equipped well to deal with clearing roads, we don't get enough to afford it. And bad weather often comes as ice, which you can't do much about anyway. Electricity can go out for days or even weeks in rural areas. And sometimes the no big deal storms turn into big deal overnight.

When I was younger I would have liked to have a bunch of snow days the way they do now. I never cared about school and would have enjoyed the extra time off.

Yes.....I've been an avid student of the Uruguay plane crash.....I read that book, for for another really great read, "MIracle in the Andes" by Nando Parrado, one of the two men who walked out to get help, far surpasses "Alive".....(it's on Amazon, another book you'll read in one sitting!!!!)
Nando Parrado did motivational speeches to corporate businesses , and was a welcome speaker who could "walk the walk/talk the talk" about adversity, the kind which no one in the audience had ever experienced....
He spoke at the Pittsburgh Speakers Series about 10 years ago, and I SO wanted to hear him and maybe get his autograph, but the venue sold out in minutes...( I live in NW PA).
He has a website, as do some of the other survivors. They have a collective website VIVEN...showing the survivors today, some of whom lead expeditions back to the site of the accident.
The Catholic Church absolved the survivors under the "this is my body and blood doctrine" They had to do what they did to live, and didn't start the process until day 10 of thier ordeal. Who knows what we would do? Or COULD do?
That account has fascinated me for years. 72 days they were there on that mountain, and two walked to safey in the Andes, with nothing more than their street clothes, that they had when the plane crashed.
I can barely stand walking to the mailbox on a cold day!!!!
When you think of what mountain climbers wear today, it's remarkable in itself.

@tansy Agree totally on not driving in the snow and ice here in Western Washington as folks seem to lose their minds on the road (more than usual) under those conditions.
Many years ago Bellingham, one of the WA larger towns, sold most their plows after consecutive snowless winters. BIG MISTAKE! First snow fall and the BellingHamsters were at a stand still for days.
Needless to say, Old Man Winter and Mother Nature had the last laugh. Bellingham restored their small fleet again.
