I started watching and then changed the channel. I really didnt like the theme of Sam Neill questioning the two girls about their mother and the married man having children with "w#0res"

I think the producers of The Dovekeepers were trying to retain historical accuracy with this method of using flashbacks to tell the story of Masada.

According to Wikipedia: The siege of Masada was one of the final events in the First Jewish–Roman War, occurring from 73 to 74 CE on a large hilltop in current-day Israel. The siege was chronicled by Flavius Josephus, a Jewish rebel leader captured by the Romans, in whose service he became a historian.

Even though I know the historical outcome of Masada, I found the first part interesting, in that it seems to be historically accurate. One of the historical inaccuracies is how this movie is dealing with adultery. In ancient Israel, adultery was a capital offense for both participants. [Leviticus 20:10, Deuteronomy 22:22]. Ironically, the commandment against adultery [Exodus 20:14] comes after the commandment against murder and before the commandment against stealing. However, there was no death penalty in Hebrew law for property crimes.

lulu2 asked, "Did the father of Yael's child commit suicide in the desert?" I was thinking that since Yael's father [Joseph Bar Elhanan] was a member of the Sicarii's [the Latin term for a murderer, or for putting a murderer on trial], could he have possibly taken Israeli justice into his own hands and killed Yael's lover, Ben Simon? Just a thought.

Thank you for your response.

That thought never crossed my mind. There did not appear to be an blood or trauma involved. My husband thought he'd committed suicide.

Josephus was a respected historian and is an important figure to Christians,

Some have argued that Jesus never existed, that he was a figment of imagination, but Josephus himself made several references to Jesus in the history he chronicled. Not only Jesus, but James the brother of Jesus, and John The Baptist. All of which serve to chronicle early Christianity.

I could be wrong, but I believe suicide was generally frowned upon in ancient Israel because of the commandment, "Thou shalt not kill," and also because life was considered a precious gift of God and it was considered sacrilegious to take one's own life since God was the Creator of all life and it should be His decision as to when one's life is ended.

*yawn* Suffered through it. I'm another fan of Cote. She was the only reason I'd tune in to NCIS.

It was like watching Ziva scoop dove poop. I thought it was terrible.

The only actor I recognized was Sam Neil.

Many years ago there was a mini series Masada with Peter O'Toole and Peter Strauss. I loved it.

The redhead (Rachel Brosnahan) was the prostitute on House of Cards and was also on Manhattan (a WGN America series about the development of the atomic bomb).

She's beautiful. (and also Kate Spade's niece)

I cannot believe I wasted 2 entire hours on this show. I thought it was awful. (so did my husband)

2 questions:

Did the father of Yael's child commit suicide in the desert?

What happened to Shirah's husband?

I didn't know that... thanks for that info I didn't watch this show at all. BUT if you want to see a great drama-- try and see if you can watch the 1st season of Manhattan (it was on WGN America) so it might be there online or maybe Netflix. The 2nd season begins this summer--it was on last summer.

Just read William Peterson has joined the cast for season 2.
