Route 40 is old, ancient, etc. 1840's is when the trail started.  Native Americans used it long before. If you stay on it long enough you'll get from Maryland to California. Even older is Baltimore Washington Blvd. (or Route 1) The trip back is called the reverse.  Obviously the older routes started on the East Coast.
