Re: The Chicken Recall Is Serious

Pickled eggs are a whole different subject than pickled pigs feet. I love having pink pickled eggs on hand.

No brains, no tongue, no tail, no kidneys, no stomach...yuck!

my grandfather ate ALL of that.........brains look like grey scrambled eggs.......and I do make a mean pickled tongue (thanks to my Basque friends growing up).........don't eat any of it but I make some great pickled tongue................................raven

Raven, my great-grandparents (Cherokee great-grandfather) had a big farm and raised just about everything they ate, so they had that "use it all" style too. It was a blast, though sometimes unnerving, to visit them.{#emotions_dlg.scared} Unfortunately, the meats, veggies, and fruits today aren't the same as they were then. I try to look to our local farmers for foods not as tainted, and it's good for the local economy, too.

we were raised on our own food.........our own meat, veggies, eggs, milk, butter........the only thing grandma "store bought" was bread and "dry goods".........nothing was ever wasted.....watched grandma make blood sausage.....*barf*........it was also the reason I don't eat meat........old habits die hard.........I have a veggie garden and we grow our own produce........hubs is going to build me a chicken coop, we'll do our own eggs, now that they allow it in the city and even though I really hate chickens............don't like or trust processed foods...................................................raven

We learned to stay outta the kitchen (and away from the barns) as much has we could, to avoid the preparations and such.{#emotions_dlg.laugh} But the food was incredibly wonderful to eat.

The hospital I worked in from the late 70's to the mid 80's offered liver and onions all the time in their cafeteria. Many employees ate it including me; although I liked it a lot better when it was piled high with onions. In fact, I was on a liver and onion kick for awhile and then started to read some negative things about consuming it. BTW....many websites say it is very nutritious.

They do, but there's also a debate about toxins in liver. That's what a liver does, filter toxins. Some say it's fine, others say beef liver carries arsenic in it.

I hear you. That was sun-up to sun-down work, maybe longer, and hard work. My great-grandparents had 14 kids, some of whom remained farming there or on adjacent farms for years, so we great-grandkids were spared. I'm sorry to hear of your father's death. I lost my father when I was young, too.

not being spared that work was one of the greatest gift my grandparents gave me......hard work never killed anyone.......but an aversion to work sure could.........you come away from a life like that knowing the importance of the earth and every things place in the grand scheme of things.......and you get that at a young age..........kinda puts you ahead of the game.......the ONLY thing I wish is I could have given my kids that same life.........so you do what you can to bring at least a little of into their world........so the garden............................raven
