I think it goes back to humans are not perfect; therefore, we do not design perfect systems and protocols. There will always be lapses and mistakes. There always were, you just didn't know it back in the olden days because such things were not publicized. So you ate the tainted chicken, came "food poisoning" or "stomach flu" and you never knew why. The fact is that our food is healthier, cleaner, safer than it has ever been, at any time in history.

This about sums up how reliable the medical field is...

A short history of medicine

"Doctor, I have an earache."<br /> <br /> 2000 B.C. - "Here, eat this root."<br /> 1000 A.D. - "That root is heathen, say this prayer."<br /> 1850 A.D. - "That prayer is superstition, drink this potion."<br /> 1940 A.D. - "That potion is snake oil, swallow this pill."<br /> 1985 A.D. - "That pill is ineffective, take this antibiotic."<br /> 2000 A.D. - "That antibiotic is artificial. Here, eat this root!"

Tiesa, no one has a gun to your head. If you want to wash the walls with your raw meat, please do so. Have at it.

Lol "New poster" "Tiesa" sounds like one of those "know it all, overbearing posters" she mentioned in the missing posters thread (:

Let's try not to jump on each other about things. Each household does things differently. People try their best in what they do.

If the chicken is tainted bad enough, I don't think any amount of washing or not washing or cooking will help. If that chicken truly was tainted, then it simply has to be recalled and handled better before it gets shipped off to stores.

I can't speak for anyone else but when I wash poultry, I don't stand in the middle of the kitchen with a high speed power washer...lol. I'm pretty sure I'm not spreading germs all over my kitchen when I rinse my chicken under cold running water. And if I am, I'll continue because died yet. My mother did it for 60 years and she didn't kill any family members either.

Let me begin by saying that it is certainly your choice to wash or not wash raw poultry. However, the poultry we buy at the store today is not our mother's or grandmother's chicken. The methods used in the mass production of poultry are geared to efficiency and low cost with safety, imo, a distant third.

You're welcome.

Since the chicken was recalled by the company, I don't think washing or not washing it would've made a difference anyway.

Exactly so why was the topic of washing even brought into the discussion anyway?

Good for you. I don't believe everything the medical field says either. They have not always been right.

So what DO you believe? And can you tell us who IS always right? Honest questions. I am interested in alternate beliefs.

I believe in what proves true for me and not washing your chicken is not one of them.

until it doesn't. Absolute truths are really not absolute.

That little ditty about medicine just proves to me that we have a long way to go with educating people. Some may never want to accept science and will ignore any good health guidelines.

Re: The Chicken Recall Is Serious

My husband likes to cook drumsticks. He buys the ones from Whole Foods that are free from hormones and antibiotics. To clean them he places in a large bowl. Afterwards, I clean everything and then spray the kitchen with Lysol.

Re: The Chicken Recall Is Serious

I've always been a freak about handling raw meat -- especially chicken. I don't rinse mine, as I feel like it sprays the juice and germs on my counter. I usually wear gloves, and Lysol/bleach the counters, knives/kitchen shears, sink and cutting board when I'm done. And I make sure it's cooked very well. This antibiotic resistant strain isn't anything I would want to mess with! It would almost make me go vegetarian, but you hear about produce being recalled often, as well. What produce cleanser do the posters here use? Just out of curiosity.

Then you missed the whole point of what it was saying. It is science or medicine that is making these claims. What is good for you today turns out not to be good for you tomorrow so how trustworthy is that?
