@BirkiLady  Giving you a shout- out and waving to you as a fellow Lincoln neighbor!  Your post is spot-on, I only wish our Huskers would have had a better debut yesterday.

@northiie57   I think people are getting confused.

SS does not withhold taxes.  Your benefit is paid to you minus Medicare and any other health ins. you pay each month.

You are liable if you owe to the Federal on a tax return-meaning you have other income besides the SS.

Then your SS tax calculated at a %.

I don't live in Vermont so I cannot give you more specifics but you do not see taxes taken out of your check.

my ex gets social security ......his "other health insurance" does not come out of his social security amount and federal taxes ARE withheld from his social security funds along with the medicare payment.

@sunshine45   The "other health insurance" would be the Medicare deduction and deductions for Advantage Plans. Ours is deducted each month by choice.

I'm not going to argue this point; you situation is not the same for everyone.

If your husband is having federal taxes withheld, then you have a situation that merits that action.

Again, you (generic) do not receive your SS with federal taxes automatically deducted; it is not a blanket situation for everyone.

We receive our monthly SS with no taxes deducted.  Period.  We do not file returns with other income.

That, for the 3rd time, is the issue with this thread.  It is a misleading title and the poster who lives in VT was looking at this as something that is done automatically.  As a result, she posted she does not have federal taxes deducted.

My response was to that particular poster.  Everyone does not have the same situations so your situation has nothing to do with what I posted to her.

Again, to that particular poster.

Again, not to everyone who collects SS benefits.

@Cakers3

exactly MY point also......which is why i posted MY experience. everyone has a different circumstance in regards to this. not sure why you felt i was "arguing" with you?

@BornToShop  Didn't realize you were also a Big Red fan . . . from Lincoln!! Yesterday was a sad disappointment. At least they were able to play. Smiley Happy

There are now three of us Lincolnites that I'm aware of. Have a feeling you live near South Point and love to shop, as do I. Miss going to my favorite restaurants! Take-out isn't the same.

"The 13 states that tax Social Security

The 36.5 million people who are at risk of double taxation live in the 13 states that currently tax Social Security benefits:

  • Colorado
  • Connecticut
  • Kansas
  • Minnesota
  • Missouri
  • Montana
  • Nebraska
  • New Mexico
  • North Dakota
  • Rhode Island
  • Utah
  • Vermont
  • West Virginia"

@Mindy D   This is a generic summary and does not include the various requirements for SS to be taxed, and each state is different.

It's misleading and I'm sure those persons collecting SS are aware of the requirements in those states.

@BirkiLady  I was born & raised in the Sandhills.  I wonder how many times you & I have passed each other shopping at South Point, lol!  If our Huskers can win at least 5 games, I will be happy!  Didn't mean to get off topic on this thread but I couldn't resist!

Re: The 13 states that tax Social Security Benefits

One of the reasons my husband and I decided to remain in our NY state home was no state tax on Social Security. It saves us quite a bit of money. Our mortgage is paid up so all we have are school/property taxes and, of course, income taxes. Still, too many people, when considering retirement, may not take this important feature into account.

@BornToShop  Where in the Sandhills? They are so beautiful. Have never understood why people think Nebraska is flat. I was born in Omaha, but my parents actually lived in Kearney until I entered third grade in Lincoln.

Been in Lincoln with the exception of several years when my husband was transferred to IA, IL, PA and OH over several years. Due to my health, we decided to stop the constant moves and return to Lincoln to be near family and close friends, excellent schools and health care, a safe city, and where we could see the stars at night. (You have no idea how we missed that in IL, PA and OH with all the smog blocking the stars!!)

I'm just happy our football is able to play, again! It keeps those guys on their scholarships and actively engaged in athletics. It also brings in a lot of money for the University and Nebraska.

Wow, Ohio really stompted us yesterday. It's obvious we haven't played other teams in many months. That hurt.
