Yes I think it is a VERY BIG DEAL. I have a smart cell phone and I can't remember the last time I used it to make a phone call, and NO, I do not text. Did use it Thursday night so I would know the "cell phone time". Renting ice time for my adult hockey league costs $3.00 per minute and they charge me by "cell phone time". I make sure we get off the ice at the exact time because I do not want to pay extra. When our time runs over I end up paying out of my own pocket and that is my reward for doing all the work to run this league.

As to "why others do it"? That is simple, Don't 'cha know that:

BAD THINGS HAPPEN ONLY TO OTHER PEOPLE

and they actually believe this nonsense. Then when it does you hear the wailing and the questions like: "Why Me? and/or. If Only I Would Have".

I see so many people on their phones in the car. It's illegal here, but they still get away with it.

I think the GPS is a distraction sometimes too.

I use my hands free when I drive in the car for conversations, but never texting.

I do not worry about the conversation, because if I'm in a heavy traffic area I either hang up or tell the person on the phone to wait a second.

I am amazed on how many people I see texting while driving. They are very easy to spot: head down, traveling slower and weaving in the lanes. I would not want a devise put in my car that blocks my phone. If I had a passenger who had a medical emergency OR if one of our kids needed to get a hold of me, I want to be able to use my phone.

it really can be! several times i would be talking with a girlfriend and so into the convo that was going on that i would almost miss an exit. but texting while driving - NEVER have done it and never will.

Obviously if you are talking on a hand held cell phone, you are driving with one hand, which at very least means no use of directional signals and windshield wipers, OR not having a hand on the steering wheel while using them. It's illegal in my state, and that's absolutely fine with me, but I still see people doing it.

when I see someone holding their phone to talk or looking down while texting....I only hope that if they have an accident....they are the only person hurt or killed...don't take me or any of the other innocent person with you...

Studies have repeatedly shown that talking at all is just as distracting as using a handheld device.

Having lost two immediate family members in accidents where the driver was "distracted", I am vehement that I will not be in a vehicle with a driver using any distractions - be it talking, texting, eating, putting on make-up, anything!

There is nothing on Earth so important for a driver to do that is worth taking another's life.

I have my phone with me for emergencies if I break down, but there is nothing anyone needs to tell me while I'm driving that can't wait. I lived almost my entire life without a cell phone and did just fine. I think it's arrogant to think oneself so important that you have to risk anyone's life to talk or text while driving.
