You go to the Nomorobo website and it will tell you what to do there, then it gives you directions on how to set it up on your AT&T account online. It was pretty easy, and I couldn't believe it when it started working! There may be more phone carriers with it by now, so you'll need to check. I actually found out about it from someone on these boards. BTW, it's totally free!
Probably myself or doobdoo mentioned it.
I have FiOs VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) and it is compatible with Nomorobo as well.
In fact, if a person goes to the Nomorobo website, you can locate your service provider (they have many listed) and you will get an e mail back letting you know if your service provider is compatible with the Nomorobo (which uses simultaneous ring to capture those robocalls, etc.)
If you have Nomorobo, you can even add numbers to their database-- yes calls do get through due to changing #'s of the scammer and also you can add legitimate calls as well-- recall phone call for an item from a supermarket contacting you for example.

We have Fios too and I just found out that that one of the calling features is call block. You can block up to 100 numbers.
That combined with nomorobo, it's getting quieter and quieter.

Have any of you received a call from your own number???
We have a Panasonic DECT 6.0 phone system with call blocker from the "other station" and were totally flummoxed when our talking caller ID announced our name and number. I did a Google and evidently this is another scam to get you to answer.
LOVE LOVE LOVE our call blocker phone system. Best $100 I ever spent - however, I'm afraid we'll use our 250 limit before we're done...

Since we changed from regular ATT to ATT Uverse, I was able to get 'nomorobo'. I can also block up to 30 numbers on my actual phone.
But none of these services block the number BEFORE it gets to the phone - at least before it rings once or twice. I wish they could do that.
I need to just be happy with something, so I get that.
But, telemarketing/soliciting, along with my eyebrows, is the absolute bane of my existence and I think it is very wrong that others can access your phone number, or your property, without your persmission.
There should be some kind of coding in unlisted numbers that they cannot even be accessed with auto-dialing.

Yeah, I had heard of that happening where your own number can call you, but the first time that that actually happened to us, I thought that it was rather freaky.
I just rolled my eyes and figured, "Whatever next," and totally ignored it and didn't bother to answer it.
Maybe it was me calling myself from another dimension though, and I should have answered! Now THAT would have been freaky! LOL!! ![]()

It's not just for AT&T customers. I've been using Nomorobo for awhile, and it's been really great. I highly recommend it!
eta: Robo-calls only ring once now. And I've noticed that those calls have greatly diminished. I love Nomorobo. Very easy to set up, and totally free. (It's not for cell phones, though.)

@silkyk wrote:Just set your answering machine to 3 rings and NEVER answer it again.(unless you can see on id that it IS someone you want to speak with) Tell all your family/friends to wait and then talk and you will answer if home. This way the telejerks can call and call and after a while they give up. Works for us! OH and leave the generic answering man that comes with the machine as your answerer. That way they have no idea who lives there and they know that generic "voice" and what it means. If you answer they know they have a "live one" that WILL answer the phone....they live for that! And yes they call a bunch of numbers all at once and if someone answers they hang up on all the other calls. And then call back again. So darn annoying.
This is exactly what I do. I NEVER answer my phone unless I can see who it is with caller ID or I'm expecting a call. And 90% of the time once the dialer encounters an answering machine they don't bother to leave a message, they just hang up.

Oh my goodness ladies, just get rid of using a landline phone! All of these simple problems will be eliminated. I was reluctant to dump my landline phone years ago. I know it was the BEST decisions I've made! I can honestly say that I've NEVER had an unwanted phone call! Never. I just can't understand why you all have such issues with phone calls when theres a very easy solution. Good luck.

Cell phones are no guarantee because they call our cell phones too.

I wanted the same thing. Digitone does do this. It supresses the ring on any blocked numbers on the phone where it's connected, along with any handsets connected with that phone. We have an AT & T phone with three handsets. It does not ring on any of the handsets. However, it will ring on other extensions not connected to this phone. Since we have the handsets by these other phones I turned the ringer off on the additional phones. I'm not sure why we keep them. We had them before we got the phone with additional handsets.
