That's dandy until it affects something you purchase. Then you'll have a problem with it.
I agree sugar isn't good for you but I also don't think it's the governments business if people want to drink sugary drinks or eat sugary foods.
How about if next, they start taxing the you know what out of red meat, pastas, dairy, bread and any other food deemed "bad." Then let's move on to hiking the tax on any vehicles that don't get at least 36 miles per gallon because no one needs to be driving a gas hog. And on and on it goes.
“How about if next, they start taxing” .....
red meat OK
pastas OK
dairy OK
bread OK
vehicles that don't get at least 36 miles per gallon OK
I also say tax-the-smiddens out of Bottled Oils. OK
Again, really cute because it's not anything you're interested in.
How about:
Bananas
Kale
All tubers
Strawberries, etc.
Good now?
I would pay anything for better health.

I drink hardly any soft drinks and what I do use are diet, plus I don't live in Seattle (beautiful place!), but that's just one of those things. As people know more they realize how profoundly bad refined sugar is.
That's not telling people they cannot buy these products, BTW, as one person mentioned. Buy away! It just may cost more - this applies to lots of stuff.

More than 50% of all cigarettes bought in NYC (some say the figure is as high as 75%) are black market cigarettes smuggled in. WIth cigarettes $13 a pack (Marlboros) come with a $4.35 state levy and $1.50 city tax. The same pack of cigarettes are $5.00 here in NC. So instead of putting in a decent tax they are losing as much as 75% of sales. I don't have a problem wtih taxes or taxing cigarettes or soda but when the tax is as much as the price of the product, it is ridiculous. I am not even a smoker or pop drinker. I mean are we going to tax all unhealthy things like fried food, red meat but when you get that greedy, you will deal with the laffer curve and a black market that gets dangerous. When a govt is taxing more than the products itself costs, it is ridiculous. I am not a fan of telling people how to eat or what to drink. When you make it this expensive, you are in essence telling them that.

I have no problem with taxes on sugary chemical water.
I am not going to cry if people who want it have to pay more for it.
I pay extra for things I want. I don't whine that they should be cheap.

@nyc1 wrote:Chicago had a tax on sugary drinks last year for a few weeks. People screamed so loudly and protested, that they reversed it.
@nyc1. I'd scream bloody murder if the municipality in which I lived passed a law like that. I strongly oppose government meddling in our daily lives to the point of telling us what we can or can't eat or drink. My guess is that there's more interest in plumping up the community coffers than making people more healthy.

Unbelievable over reach.... How dare the government dictate by virtue of taxes what we should not eat/drink.... it's also incredibly short sighted of them because history shows us that humans will get what they want (good for us or not, legal or not) by however they can. This is going to make some enterprising people rich by setting up those taxable items right beyond the state border and make them tax free. Good grief, we've all seen this type of greed and over reach before and it doesn't work.....

I would pay for health too but what if you can't afford it.The prices of a food keeps going up and there are more people needing assistance.I think we need to find a way to get people back to work and off drugs so that we can slow taxing everything.

It is just my opinion, but diet soda is almost as bad, because of the artificial sugar. I think it is fine in moderation, but like anything...in excess is not good. Jmho

Heya Shoey! ITA
For some people the diet soda might even be a worse choice, but that's not to say that refined sugar isn't still a horrible choice.
I keep on hand some Diet 7up, Diet Squirt, and Diet Ginger Ale, as those are favorites. I often go months without drinking one or any of them and maybe, sometimes during warmer weather I will drink a maximum of two 12oz cans in a week's time. I can imagine if I drank it all the time it would be a very bad choice.

Is it not on diet as well @shoekitty? I have read several times that diet soda is worse becuase people who drink it crave more sugar than they do with the actual sugar soda.
