Just wondering, did you wear sunscreen too when you got that pre cancerous lesion?

Yes I was. I think it came from a light sunburn I got on the top of my nose one day while we were vacationing about 10 years prior. We had gone sailing for about an hour. An impulsive little trip. Never been sailing before or since. I wore sunscreen and a hat. Afterwards my nose was red, although the rest of my face was fine. There had been lots of sun, wind and spray in the boat. Never had a burn on my nose before, so I'm thinking that was the cause. Although maybe a lifetime of sun exposure prior to that was also to blame.

As a kid/teen we lived a few blocks from the beach and we were there from early morning to sunset.  Did all the crazy baby oil, etc. to get a tan as a teen. Where I lived everyone was tan in the summer.  I have had the worse sunburns where my shoulders crusted over with scabs and even had to go to the doctor for sun poisoning and for burnt swollen eye lids.  I am light skinned and always peeled like crazy.  My mother would spend the summer scolding me, but she too didn't know the future consequences. I've only had one squamous cell removed.  Foolish yes, but who knew at the time.  I haven't sat in the sun since my 20s.

As a teen I lived in CT and spent hours a day at the beach eventually turning a gorgeous coppery color.  No oils or lotions.

When I moved to Florida the first time at the beach for a few hours I turned into a lobster and ended up in bed for almost a week.

Lesson learned.  Now sun exposure is extremely limited and never during the highest UV Index periods.

@Marp   I tanned from when I was a kid.  Went to FLA for the first time at age 25 - was already tan - got a terrible sunburn with blisters first day on the beach.  That FLA sun is brutal.  Now I embrace my fair skin.  I try hard to avoid sun when I'm outside - pants, long sleeves, hats, etc.  Even gloves.

@FranandZoe,  for years after that FL sunburn if I spent more than minutes in the sun with my chest area exposed, like when wearing a tank top, I would rapidly develop water blisters in that area only.

Now that I live in NC I can be in the sun for comparatively longer periods of time without a problem but I avoid doing so.

As I said in my initial post--lesson learned.  I consider myself among the most fortunate that I (biting my tongue so not to tempt the Fates) never developed any skin cancers.

What is good for the goose today will also be good for the gander tomorrow.

As posted, I was a Sun worshipper when young & had a few squamous cell cancers removed & two melanomas within the past two years. My husband just had a Mohs procedure for a basal cell cancer. The office was full & the doctor said he has seen a tremendous number of skin cancer cases this year & many pretty advanced.

Guilty of "tanmaxxing" in my teens ad 20s.  I only used Bain de Solei (for that San Trozez tan 😂).  I would get very tan and not burn (thank you Italian ancestors), but I know better now.  I stopped doing that in my 30s.  Luckily I survived.  No major sun damage, wrinkles, or splotchy skin.  I didn't think younger people were still into tans but evidently I know nothing!  I'd rather be pale as a ghost than have skin damage or hose horrible fake tans.

I think every Dermatologist office should have a picture of Brigette Bardot.

I didn’t know who she was when I saw her picture in a frame on an end table in the waiting area at the Dermatologist …

BUT it was scary enough to make ANYONE and EVERYONE wear SUNSCREEN !! 😳

It is amazing how much we have all learned. As a kid in the 60s, my mom always brought Coppertone to the beach for us.  I think at the time, the SPF was 4.

wind and weather will really do a number on skin and hair.  I saw pictures not that long ago of Caroline Kennedy.  Her face looks so weathered, she looks much older than she is.  Part of that I'm sure is all the sadness she has endured, but also I think Cape Cod had a hand in it.

Hate to see this, but not much one can do-kids/young people live in the moment-I was one of those young people, and then at the of age 29 I went to my first Dermatology appt for a mole issue...that mole was fine, but the mole on my chest, not so much-I ended up having Malignant Melanoma. Had surgery and they did a skin graft because of the location on my chest. I have a lovely scar that was awful to look for a long time as a young girl...of course I got used to it but it's pretty ugly, even now. That was 32 years ago; I now make my daughter go every year, as I do, for a body check. Premature aging is the least of it.

Take time every day to enjoy where you are without a need to fix it
