As a teen I lived in CT and spent hours a day at the beach eventually turning a gorgeous coppery color.  No oils or lotions.

When I moved to Florida the first time at the beach for a few hours I turned into a lobster and ended up in bed for almost a week.

Lesson learned.  Now sun exposure is extremely limited and never during the highest UV Index periods.

@Marp   I tanned from when I was a kid.  Went to FLA for the first time at age 25 - was already tan - got a terrible sunburn with blisters first day on the beach.  That FLA sun is brutal.  Now I embrace my fair skin.  I try hard to avoid sun when I'm outside - pants, long sleeves, hats, etc.  Even gloves.

I've never understood why anyone would want to tan.
Two of my friends are dealing with the effects of tanning when they were young.

They are constantly having spots removed from their body.  Plus, their hands, arms and décolletage are covered with sun spots.

Not much new except for the social media aspect.  I'm a Baby Boomer and we did it too. We were out all summer long, every afternoon at the local pool, sometimes the beach when we could drive, and using Johnson's Baby Oil, doing our best to get as dark as we possibly could.  One year I used something called Swedish Tanning Secret and I got really dark.  When we'd get sunburned in the beginning of summer we'd slather on the Noxema and lay ice cold washcloths all over ourselves to cool it down.  Then we would blister and peel. After the initial peel of the season, we just kept getting darker and darker.

Yes, did all that & more.  Sun-In for the hair.  Besides Johnson's Baby Oil, also bought all the tanning lotion brands at the time....Coppertone, Sea & Ski & Hawaiian Tropic.  When getting a suntan/sunburn wasn't enough the old fashioned way, we'd resort to Q-T to get the ultimate fake, orange tan.  And this is from someone who lived/lives "Where The Boys Are."  Woman Happy

I never had a tan in my life. Or a sun burn. Nor have I ever laid out in the sun. I just don't like being in the sun, not for any reason. Still, I developed an oozing precancerous lesion on the top of my nose. It had to be surgically removed.

UV rays can be terribly destructive even on cloudy days.

I have several friends and family members with melanoma.

My Take.  Many people don't look good with a tan.

I'm glad I didn't lay out in the sun like my friends did back when I was younger. My mom  told me eons ago that the sun would make my skin look old and wrinkled with brown spots. She was ahead of her time in taking good care of skin.

@AuntMame 🌸

Just wondering, did you wear sunscreen too when you got that pre cancerous lesion?

I wondered the same @RescueLover.  I will not go out in the sun any time of the year without 50 sunblock on my face.

I tanned some when I was in my 20's...but by the time I was in my 30's I said no more just lying there.  I would go to the beach and stay under the umbrella.  A few moments in the ocean, slathered down with sunscreen.  I can remember even then, I was worried about the exposure.  But we were on a family vacation and I wanted to enjoy my time with my kids before that time faded away.

It is good to get some sun on our skin for vitamin D, but the UV rays are getting harsher.  It also releases the melatonin and serotonin and gives us a deceptive feel good at the time.  That is why it is addictive I believe.

@SilleeMee  -  My mom, who was Filipino, never laid out in the sun.  They just don't do that in the Philippines.   I'm assuming it was the same where your mom was from too?
