It's not n easy decision send a sick kid to school. But this is an employer market and they control things. Gone are the days of employers understanding when kids are sick. I worked for a Fortune 500 company for nearly 40 years. i routinely saw people get written up and/or fired for it.

So parents have to decide if they want to pay for mortgage, medical bills, food, utilities, or if they want to lose their jobs.
Or - here's a thought - perhaps someone whose budget is that extremely tight should have considered not having children until or unless they could afford to raise them. Raising children is expensive & that exprense is totally the parents responsibility - no one else's. Contraception is very inexpensive.

Here’s a thought @151949. Did it ever occur to you that a couple had children when they COULD afford them and then something unforeseen happened to them? One of them died and the mom was left alone to pay the hospital bills and feed and shelter the children alone? There are many variations on that theme that actually happen to well meaning parents.

My granddaughter is a beginning teacher of 1st grade. They are not allowed to "bother" the parents unless the child has a temp of over 101. She had a little boy who was coughing and crying that he didn't feel well. She sent him to the nurse - who sent him back - he didn't have a temp and they were not going to "disturb" his parents. He cried all day.

Isobel Archer: that is a sorry situation for all. Teacher has difficulty focusing on educational duties, other children likewise distracted, and poor child feels like no one is listening. I find this unacceptable. At least keep child in nurse office or counseling center. I would have lost it!

Not to say this makes it alright to bring sick children to daycare. I think taking a sick child out in the cold and exposing others to it is immoral.

I don’t know of any daycares that allow sick children to attend. And if a child gets sick while there, someone has to come pick them up right away.

You couldn’t pay me enough to care for someone who has the flu right now.

They don't have to be visably ill to be caring the flu. If we could see everyone who is carrying the flu - it would not be an epidemic.

@Lipstickdiva About 70% of my property taxes go to the school system which then pays for things that I would never approve of buying. Why should my tax money go for a big fancy weight room? What part of education is that? Why did my local school board buy a large portion of land for a "school" that would hold all sorts of sports fields and, oh yes, 4 classrooms. And they paid way more than the going rate for land. That should have been put up for a vote. When we did get to vote for that excuse of a school, it was voted down 3 times. So, no sports arena, but they still own the land and sooner or later they will try again. Sorry, every sport known to man is not education. They should have to put big expenses like that up to a vote. I'm against having to pay this much for school systems that we get no say in. Only 10% of my taxes go for important things like Police and Fire Departments. And the schools have a cap of 5% increase every year, so of course they demand that 5%. And if we don't want to pay the awful amount they demand, they will just take our home away from us. We have no way to say no. I know, you'll say vote against the board. Can't no one runs against whoever is on the board. They run unopposed. Stuck with a bad deal.
