I apologise if I my post was misunderstood by my explaining things incorrectly.
"Tim" knows better. He is a top notch car salesman who does pretty well for himself. He had told us stories about experiencing his own prejudice. He's a clown and thought he was funny but his joke fell flat.
This clown is a foolish man. I hope he keeps thoughts like this to himself.

wow what a question to ask. she handled with great calmness.
Gatherings of family can bring out very strange breath stopping questions.
I had that happen to me years ago. I told someone in confidence something. when we were in a gathering of friends, he brought up what i told in confidence. I couldn't breath for several minutes, I changed the subject real fast, so not sure if anyone caught on.

Unfortunately, many of us have a "Tim" wandering around in our lives. Perhaps he should try an "open mike" night at a comedy club and discover he has no talent in that arena. The young lady was more gracious than I would have been.

My "best answer" to a rude question is: "WHY do you ask?"

It's about as funny as joking about a bomb to the TSA.

I would have said to her "We're sorry he is rude and stupid, but he's family and we are stuck with him." Following which he would have gotten a Gibbs slap on the head.

She is very kind.
My mouth would have gotten the best of me and I would have said something like "Does it hurt to be so stupid?" I KNOW that would have been wrong, but geeze, sorry to say, this is not just a flat joke, it also a lack of basic manners and common sense.
Stepping down from my soapbox now.

She did handle that well. Good for her!

Growing up when we asked my uncle a question, he'd say if we were writing a book to leave that chapter out. Tim is not as funny as he thinks.
