THE FORD FAMILY'S JETSETTER TURNED DISABILITY ADVOCATE

[ Edited ]

In the Sixties and Seventies, the daughters of car scion Henry Ford II were constantly in the glossy magazines, especially in periodicals like "W",  the fashion and society bible.

The sisters were blonde, busy "post-debutantes", known and seen everywhere.

Only a few years apart--  Charlotte Ford Niarchos, and Anne Ford Uzielli.

Their names conjured up beautiful clothes, yachts and international travel, philanthropy and charity events, splashy marriages. They had one younger brother, Edsel II.

The Fords in the Sixties-- parents, Charlotte and Anne, and Edsel II, at one of the girls' deb parties, I think.  It seems like a whole other world....

Probably Charlotte's most notorious, if brief, marriage was to Stavros Niarchos, the Greek shipping billionaire, below. He was over 30 years her senior. They had one child, Elena, who would become important in the Ford family busiess.

Charlotte was known for her "cool".  Always composed, sophisticated.

Charlotte here with her colorful stepmother, Christina Ford, left.

Younger sister Anne is frequently seen laughing in photos, and is described as warm and approachable.  She married Giancarlo Uzielli, a Florentine investment broker, and had two children with him, Alessandro and Allegra.

Anne as a "Town and Country" cover girl. Whenever I think about the Ford sisters, I think about the luxuriant, synthetic blonde "falls" of hair that were popular in the Sixties!

The Henry Ford II family in midcentury had quite a history, unprecedented opportunity, and quite a bit to live down-- including industrialist car magnate grandfather, the first Henry Ford's unsavory opinons.

Luckily, his son Edsel ( the first Edsel!) distanced himself from that, including the antisemitism of Ford Sr.'s Dearborn newspaper.

And Edsel's son Henry Ford II, (father of Charlotte, Anne, and Edsel II) whatever his other faults, made a point of disavowing those views and showed by his actions that he did.

Charlotte and Anne's parents, Henry Ford II and Anne McDonnell Ford:

( Boy, it's confusing when a family has a preference for the same names, used generation after generation.  This family has multiple Henrys, Edsels, Annes and Charlottes...)

Here's a partial family tree which might help.

I'm skipping over so much history, but anyway, flash forward to Anne Ford Uzielli's discovery that her daughter Allegra had severe learning disabilities.  By this time she was pretty much on her own with her children, and was overwhelmed by all the conflicting information she was being given.

It was recommended that Allegra be institutionalized. Anne went into overdrive discovering what she could do to help her daughter.  Eventually, she found a lot, and she did a lot.

She eventually became Chairman of the board of the National Center for Learning Disabilities from 1989 to 2001.  She also wrote an inspiring book for families for similar challenges--

I was vaguely familiar with the Fords, but never knew any of this about Anne and her daughter's challenges.  Have now read excerpts of the book, and it's very moving and readable.

Anne with both her children, Alessandro and Allegra.

At last report, Allegra has been married, and has been able to hold various jobs, including that of figure skater instructor.

The other book of Anne's ( I haven't read it) that sounds tantalizing is Anne's memoir of her own life, and her tumultuous family--

P.S.

Charlotte died at the end of 2025.  The sisters in their maturity-

P.P.S.  Interesting sidelight:

Some family members have been quite active in the family business, like Elena Niarchos, who I think may go by the Ford name now.  She is chief dealer engagement officer, as of 2023.

Elena, who was Charlotte's daughter with Stavros Niarchos, had to fight to inherit from her father's huge estate, but was denied a share in it, interestingly.  So you can see why she had thrown in her lot with the Fords.

There are so many fascinating tidbits concerning this complex family, too many to recount.

@Oznell  What an interesting story.  Surprising the "next generations" of Henry Ford has not been made into  a documenatry mini series.

📢📢 Netflix, History Channel, FOX Business, Discovery ID, Smithsonian Channel, etc. where are you????? 📢📢

The last picture of Ann, she looks like Shirly Temple a little.

Re: THE FORD FAMILY'S JETSETTER TURNED DISABILITY ADVOCATE

@Oznell @I do remember the sisters on magazine covers. Thank you for trip down memory lane.  One used to have her  blond hair streaked. She had deep tan and wore  pale pink, nearly white  lipstick!  . Which was quite the rage. And the falls, oh yes!,  thise were days of falls, hair pieces, switches and false lashes!!!  I remember around 1964, my aunt taking me to San Francisco, to Emporium, where I had a handmade, switch or fall made to match my hair!   I would braid it, then pull the braid things up, tack with hair pins, pull my hair up and back, then place on top of head. And anchor it down. It was like a laced chignon on top.  Bouffant
It seems to me I remember the one Ford on talk circuits talking about learning disabilities.  Kids were so stigmatized back then, so shameful! I am 78, so things were different when I was kid.  If a child had disability, they didn't think of as disability, curable and someone who could be trained. were considered stupid or worse.  No time was taken to teach them because they were thought strong willed and unwilling to learn, or worse....then neglected.  I remember when I was in 4th grade a boy who always sat in back, ignored, and given other work to do.  Then held back.  Glad those days are gone.

@shoekitty  JFK had an older sister who had a mental disability.  She was NOT "hidden" which was highly unusual for people of wealth & standing during that time.  Rose her mother made sure of that.  However, w/o informing Rose, her hubby Joseph had a lobotomy done on his daughter.  Rose never forgave him.

Re: THE FORD FAMILY'S JETSETTER TURNED DISABILITY ADVOCATE

Here's what I found on that in the Irish Times, @Mz iMac :

Athens - The American car heiress, Ms Helena Ford, has no claim on the estate of her estranged father, shipping tycoon Mr Stavros Niarchos, an Athens court has ruled. In a ruling at the weekend, the court said Ms Ford, who was claiming 10 per cent of her father's vast estate, had no inheritance rights because her parents' 1965 marriage was annulled in Greece at Mr Niarchos's request.

"Children of annulled civil marriages are legitimate but have no rights to their parents' inheritance," the ruling stated. Mr Niarchos, who died last year in Switzerland, left a fortune estimated at about $2.5 billion to the four children he had with Ms Eugenia Livanos, and to other relatives and friends. Ms Ford was not mentioned in his will.

Isn't that interesting, that because of the annullment, the Greek courts deemed her to have no inheritance rights. It seems so unfair-- there was no doubt that she was his daughter.

What a great story from your youth, @shoekitty --  I bet you looked fabulous!   I love a lot of the aesthetics of the period.

Agreed-- it wasn't that long ago that children with disabilities like Allegra had far fewer options.  Love that things continue to improve in that regard.

Re: THE FORD FAMILY'S JETSETTER TURNED DISABILITY ADVOCATE

I had "technical difficulties" with my first post, and it posted accidentally, before I finished!

Anyway, wanted to list a few other Ford family members who work for the company still. It's kind of neat that a company founded generations ago, still has family members in various key positions.

Key Ford family members currently involved:
  • Bill Ford (William Clay Ford Jr.): Great-grandson of Henry Ford, serving as Executive Chairman.
  • Alexandra Ford English: Daughter of Bill Ford, she serves on the Board of Directors and has worked in corporate strategy and autonomous vehicles (AVs).
  • Henry Ford III: Son of Edsel Ford II, he serves on the Board of Directors and has worked in investor relations and corporate strategy.
  • Elena Ford: Great-great-granddaughter of Henry Ford, she serves as Chief Dealer Engagement Officer and previously as Chief Customer Experience Officer.
  • Edsel Ford II: While he has stepped back from day-to-day operations, he remains on the board of directors as a director emeritus

Etc.

It's been written that he had this done to his adult daughter because he was abusing her while she was living with him in London.  This procedure left her with the mind of a 2 year old, never able to express or relate to anyone what had happened.

I read that when Rosemary hit puberty and started noticing and interacting with boys, her parents panicked that she would become pregnant and cause a scandal. Poor thing. She didn't cause any scandals, but her parents sure did.

Rose did not attend her either of her daughter Kick's weddings and I'm not even sure Rose attended Kick's funeral.

A totally dyfunctional family.

This is STILL happening today. From the very top of the food chain. Disabled and people with learning disabilities are routinely mocked publically by people who are supposed to lead. The name calling and disparaging stereotypes are vile and shocking.

We are backsliding in this regard. Both in public attitude and funding and research. It will take years to turn it around.
