When the IRS and law enforcement officials issue warnings about phone scams involving tax collection, they always say the same thing: The IRS will never call you out of the blue to demand payment.
That could change, according to legislators concerned about a little surprise tucked into a recently signed federal bill.
A provision in the emergency budget plan, signed into law by President Barack Obama, allows federal agencies to make robocalls demanding payment of back taxes, as well as student loans and mortgage debts.
That provision, says U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez, will lead to confusion and increased opportunities for scammers.
Menendez is co-sponsoring a bill dubbed the Help Americans Never Get Unwanted Phone calls (HANGUP) Act, which would repeal Section 301 of the Budget Act of 2015. Section 301 eliminates the current federal requirement that a caller must first get a party's consent before sending autodial or prerecorded calls or texts to cellphones for collection of debts owed to or guaranteed by the federal government.

I don't answer numbers out of my area code that I don't know. If I get a message from the IRS, I will get their number off their .gov site and call them back to determine if it is a scam or not.

No reason to hear from them, but they can mail me what they need if they ever have to.

If you pay your taxes you won't have anything to worry about. No reason for them to call me unless it is a scam. I don't answer the phone or my front door to unknown people.

I think it's going to fail. Yes if you OWE, you better pay up. But who could tell if it's real..., just put a lien on the bank accounts like they SHOULD do. Now the Government can't handle their collections anymore??? Really? More money taxpayers money spent that we don't have.

I would refer them to my accountant who prepares our taxes.

If you don't know the number coming up on your phone ignore it. If it important they will leave a text message. I never talk to anyone I don't want to.

@Tadaki wrote:You can thank Congress for this. They have outsourced the collection of money owed to the IRS. Calls will not be coming from federal employees, although I don't know how the debt collectors will represent themselves.
I think most of these collectors will be from Nigeria!!
If they ask for your Green Card number instead of your cc, then you'll know for sure.
