This was discussed on a talk radio show I was half listening to. So I missed important details - such as when this would start. And it is not just the IRS. Other federal agencies can make these debt-collecting robocalls too.
Here is one article:

Our news reporters here always tell everyone - the IRS doesn't call you, if you receive a call from them, it's a scam. They only contact you by mail. So many people have been robbed of their money in this scam.

My tax guy sent out an e-mail warning about this scam.

You can thank Congress for this. They have outsourced the collection of money owed to the IRS. Calls will not be coming from federal employees, although I don't know how the debt collectors will represent themselves.

The new legislation allows the IRS to make debt-collection robocalls, so when this goes into effect, it will no longer be true that the IRS would never call you.
The big problem is how will consumers be able to tell a legitimate call from a scam call. This is the main concern.

Unless I see something on IRS letterhead, I would ignore it.

@The Monkey on My Back, not sure why the link doesn't work. It is on my iPad. I googled "nj.com IRS tax calls" and it was in the list that came up. It started off with - The IRS could soon call you about debt collection ...

It'a SCAM, HANG UP ! I've received these calls along with calls from "Microsoft" to fix my computer. I told the caller from Microsoft to find a real job (sounded like they had a india accent). Haven't had a call in some time now. I have no reason to get a call from the IRS and until they send me a letter I will not respond to the robo calls. I have not received any letters. I just heard on the am news that a lady received an email that she won a Toyota and a million dollars, she did not fall for it, called the news media who checked with Toyota and confirmed it is a scam to get your personal information. Hat's off to this elderly lady who did not fall for it. She also reported it to the Atty General's office. These people are scandalous ! Stay safe, protect yourself and investigate these calls if you are concerned they may be real. I never give out my personal information and have no problem hanging up on a scammer or telling them to go to hell (which is were they are going anyway) Can you tell I'm passionate about this kinda stuff ?
