Suggestions Needed for Neighbor's Loud Pool Filter

A young family moved into the home next to ours in July. I've met the wife, baby and 4 year old and they seem very nice. The husband works a different shift and I haven't had a chance to meet him. There is a 4 ft. above ground pool the previous owners left. It's been there many years and I'm not sure if the filter is old or needs to be cleaned but it has gotten very loud and buzzing. Our deck overlooks the backyard and the filter is in direct line with it so the noise carries straight to us. It happened last year and the previous owner did something and it quieted down a bit but now it's back to an annoying buzz.

I've only seen them swim once. The previous owners always closed the pool on Labor day and swim season is long over yet this new family still has not shut it down and the filter runs on timer about 9am to 9pm every day.  I'm so tired of hearing the sound and would love to sit on the deck and enjoy the last of the nicer weather but it's distracting. I tried headphones and earplugs but it doesn't work.   I do see the wife outside often waiting for the afternoon school bus so could approach her casually but
I'm hesitant to say something because I'm not sure anything can be done and don't want to start off complaining.
Any suggestions?

It could be a variety of things, but my immediate though is it could be clogged. Maybe they don't know anything about caring for a pool? You could go over and just tell them that you know the pool filter is really loud, they might want to check it before a mechanical failure happens. They can be expensive to replace, although I know little about those above ground ones.

Also sometimes it's noisy because the water level is low, so it's harder to suck the water into the filter.

I'm no expert on pools but I wouldn't think a filter should not run constantly for that many hours.  Sounds like new owners have no clue how a pool system works and should get a pool service to clean and close it at the end of the season.  Running for such a long time - I suspect the motor will burn out.  It would be like your refrigerator working overtime.  Pray it burns out!  LOL

If you live somewhere like FL or Arizona in the summer you need to run the filter longer than you'd think. When had pools in our homes in Vegas and So CA and in summer the filters were on a lot. It's a constant battle with the sun killing the chlorine and needing to brush and filter heavily just to keep the pool clear.

I would approach this as being concerned about something being wrong with their equipment. You might want to mention the previous owners having the same noise and were able to do something to correct the problem.

Our  neighbor had a pool and we always heard the loud filter.  My husband told him and they put a piece of foam rubber under it and it took the noise level down quite a bit.

Might be worth a try.

Good luck as I know what you are going through.  They finally took it down when the kids stopped using it.

When you see her mention it... say you noticed because it hasn't happened before & since they're new they wouldn't know something is wrong. It's such a simple thing, can be said nicely & isn't complaining at all. I don't understand why people can't speak up.

Re: Suggestions Needed for Neighbor's Loud Pool Filter

I had a bad experience with the previous owner when I spoke up. She was bipolar and started screaming at me that they knew it was loud and were busy and then started arguing about other issues. Although they did quiet it down the next day, it's since made me nervous about approaching neighbors. I know nothing about pools so am hoping those who have them could enlighten me to the right way to handle. Thanks all!

@ForumOlivia,     I would ask your neighbors if they could please fix the filter noise.

@ForumOlivia  We dealt with a loud pool issue apparatus by contacting thew neighbor and asking them to get it fixed, which they did.
