Many places do this single shipping method, and I hate it. My husband whines about all the packaging, and I get angry opening a huge box filled with fillers and stuffing to find my mascara or a small bottle of vitamins. It is ridiculous. QVC does this often. I do not order a lot from them anymore. But I ordered 3 Lori G tops. Each one came in a separate bag.

Kohls sends many of my orders out separately. I ordered 4 items and they are all being shipped separately. I even ordered 2 of the same item which is a large item and they were shipped separately. I had free shipping but you know the prices of every item are jacked up to allow for the free shipping.

I shop at Walmarts and I order online from them and have never had a problem with broken items.....
I would prefer items to be packed in one box/bag then many....as long as they are packed properly.....
The Q..always sends stuff in separate bags and boxes...even if its the same item...different colors...I hate all that waste...just more recycling for me...

I think the warehouses they send this stuff from are so big it's probably more efficient to send everything separate especially now during the holidays.
I certainly agree the prices are jacked up to cover free shipping.
It was nice that they didn't make you return all the broken stuff but it sure is frustrating when you get it broken. When you spoke to customer service she probably had to process each of those broken items on a separate form which would cause the seven separate packages. I like everything separate and where I live you can recycle cardboard which I do.

"Walmart.com" has it's own distribution fulfillment centers in the US (only 2-3), thus the one box for your original order...and the shipping on those are by location taking the standard 7-10 days shipping. Fast forward your special replacement order. Those items are packed, not in the fulfillment center, but in Walmart warehouses where different items are manufactured and/or housed. For instance...say, coffee. That might be manufacturered & housed in, say, Seattle. Paper towels? Could be North Carolina.
So when your boxes came separately, they came from different areas...and shipping was probably expedited quickly via FedEx.
Note: The above illustration is entirely hypothical on my part. The only fact I know is the distribution centers for online orders is separate from the B/M stores...they have one over in Ft. Worth. Makes sense, though, there would be different warehouses for different purposes for a large store like Walmart.
I remember watching a 'behind the brand' show on MSNBC years ago. Their shipping & distribution process is highly revered among their peers...they set the standard. It's crazy sophisticated. Hope this sheds a little light on your situation. When we order something & hit the 'process' button, everything is automated. It's really quite an interesting behind the scenes process!
What one should take away from this is....there's SO much behind the scenes, we don't have a clue what's going on. The delivery of your original order could've been destroyed via shipping...a non-Walmart company. So many hands touching your order.

A WalMart rant, how odd to see one on this board.

Kohl's does the same thing. Macy's does the same thing. Belk's does the same thing. Home Depot does the same thing. And that is just a few retailers from my orders in the past 12 months.

I recently ordered some dishware from WM and it was packaged perfectly to avoid breakage.
Although I have a love/hate relationship with this store, that has been my overall experience when I have items shipped free to my home or the store. They are always well packaged. Maybe it depends on the area from which they are shipped?
I do recycle any packaging that I can.

Mostly I suspect how things get packed has as much to do with what individual person packs the item as which store or chain it comes from.
My worst packaging story ever belongs to a chain noted for its superior packaging and shipping - and the item they shipped me cost over $750. I still shop at the chain, I just don't ever buy what's not in my local store already.
