Jersey Mikes was bought out in Jan 2025 by Blackstone and shrank its portions and customers not happy.

Subway was apparently bought out by Roark Capital in a multi billion dollar deal and Firehouse Subs to Restaurant Brands International for 1 billion.

Though these places were convenient it is considered processed food and not healthy.

Feelings about the actual food aside, these are not bad moves for any of the chains mentioned.  These are all capital based moves that will lead to expansion and / or current store improvements.

Someone I work with is a partner in a Jersey Mike's franchise and according to him, they have not changed any portions and are continuing to do well.

When a chain is franchised, individual owners make decisions for their own stores.  That sometimes gets around as a corporate decision, which it isn't.  I know this first hand because I oversee 125 franchised restaurants for a well known company.

We have Subway near us and I don't really like it.  I prefer Jersey Mike and Firehouse, but they are far from me. It's like they planned it.  Subway in the Southwest, Jersey Mike in the Northeast, and Firehouse in th Northwest of me.

I have only eaten Subway food 3 times, it was okay but was not ever my choice, they were often the convenient choice. One of my best friends owned a local sub shop and if we wanted a sub that is where we got it. She sold it and it went downhill fairly quickly, the new owners chose cheaper products for the sandwiches and bought the bread instead of making it each morning at 4 a.m. as she (and her dearest friends) always did. It's said that the secret to Subway is the proprietary mayo. . . .my friend always just used olive oil.

I love a good sub, and used to be a Subway and Bellacino's customer, but have learned the only good sub these days comes out of my kitchen.

My dissatisfaction started with poor customer service.  I only had one negative experience with that employee, but apparently other customers had complaints as well, and the employee was not seen there again.  The main reason I stopped eating Subway was due to what I saw with the food, cleanliness habits by employees, and county health inspection reports, which at that time were published by the local paper.  The inspection reports verified what I'd seen and suspected, which then ended my sub purchases.

There doesn't seem to be much left in the country that private equity isn't willing to ruin.

I liked the occasional Subway sandwich. But they reduced the amount of meat. They make you pay extra for more meat. So it was good bye Subway for me. I don't want an expensive bread sandwich. There are some local pizza shops not too far away that make Italian sandwiches the old way. Or we buy the meat and cheese and the bread from the bakery and make our own.

We think Jersey Mike is pretty decent quality, they are very generous to the community and often offer great discounts.

@shoekitty

My DH himself loved Firehouse so I saw what they are all about on their postings in the restaurant.

Be well.🙂
