Strange occurrence concerning Expedia

Six months ago my friend booked a room directly with the Hilton for this weekend. Yesterday she received an urgent voicemail and e-mail saying that her reservation couldn't be met and on the confirmation receipt was "booked by Expedia". This doesn't make any sense. I, too, had made a reservation directly with the hotel and wasn't bounced. Has anyone heard of this?
