I live on the CT shoreline. We lost power about 8:30 in the evening on Friday. Our town seemed to take the brunt of the storm, 88 percent out of power. Didn't take too long for it to become freezing. We had just had a super generator installed, butt snow cam so fast and SOOO much, we couldn't get out to turn it on. We were going to wait t out, Sons were having a fit. One lives in middle of state. He finally said you have two choices, either go to the shelter or I am going to come down and get you. OK, I called 911, they sent the police, I have asthma, and was stressed out of course, they had 5 police come, good thing. The snow was up to my hips, I couldn't make it, two were on either side of me, I started feeling dizzy and heart pounding. I told them I was going down, and I did, they picked me up and sort of tossed me to 3 others on the other side of the 5 foot mound the plow had left. They kept aying long slow breaths. When we got to the shelter, the National Guard was there, they called for the medic took me inside, monitored me, and I began to recover. I had no idea what the shelter was like. Th Red Cross, nurses, volunteers, police, National Guard were there. Food, snacks, drinks, etc. all very good. Took us to the sleeping area and got us cots and blankets. Back to the dining room, and 2 neighbors were there. So we had a good time. Dinner was served. Next morning a breakfast to put anyone to shame. Professional chefs and volunteered to come and cook.
I had wanted to take my cats, but could not catch them, So they had to fend for themselves. The animals were put in a separate area and a policeman was in charge of them.
My sons and daughter-in-law were checking constantly on us and getting drive plowed and power. My son called to say at 1:00 the power was on. So we were told the police would be there to pick us up. Got home and driveway was being cleared.
I just want to say, I won't hesitate going to the shelter again, and God bless the Red Cross, police, fire department National Guard and the wonderful volunteers. Thank you for listening to me, I am so grateful to all these people and so glad to be home and warm again.
