My grandfather was a lighthouse keeper and I have a picture of him standing on rocks surrounding the lighthouse he served at and the water is frozen like that. Not the lighthouse itself.

I'm sure the heat from the building and the light kept it somewhat less frozen like the one in the picture.

His house was only accessible by boat.

Now they are all automated and unmanned so there is no one to keep the ice away.

That's cool, CelticCrafter. I've actually been to this lighthouse in St. Joseph in the summer. It's so strange to see it like this.

In Northern Michigan there are a few light houses that still have lighthouse keepers. They accept applications and usually retired couples apply for the job. I think they switch keepers every year or so. It would quite an experience! A couple that we know were trying to get the "job", but they didn't. They were bummed.

we live about an hour, from lake michigan and it's really beautiful (but dangerous) in the winter. this latest storm, has been brutal. wonderful pics. i've only been to the lighthouses, in the summer.
