Re: Speaking of Neighbors....

[ Edited ]

Years ago we lived in the vicinity of our college. Every September there would be cars lining our street for a few weeks until the students figured out where the lots for the college were that had empty spaces. It was a little noisi with the cars parking at 7 am and slamming their doors, but, hey, it's a public street, so nothing to do!

Eventually I began to miss the cars in October as our street was too quiet and I didn't understand how much I'd come to like the hub bub! Especially since the first neighbor we had in our first place used to stand outside with a shotgun whenever we got in our car! He even put up a chicken wire fence around his yard which made it impossible to use the passenger side door! I'll take the parked cars anytime!

Re: Speaking of Neighbors....

I know that it is my irrational sense of entitlement, but I feel the same as KittyLou.  I "get" that streets are public property, but I always wanted the street in front of my house to remain open for my (or my guests') parking pleasure.

We had a great group of surrounding neighbors.  My only complaint was they and their kids and their kids' friends never thought twice about parking in front of someone else's home.  My home faced east and if I were returning home from the south, I always made a point of going around the block so I would be in the direction of parking in front of my own house.  A very little tiny inconvenience for what I considered the neighborly thing to do.

The other irritation is when someone  parking in front of my house would block the sidewalk walkway going out into the street.  It is as if they don't even understand that those walkways are designed so one doesn't have to walk on the boulevard grass.

I eventually solved the problem by using our alley to park in either our little driveway or the garage.  And since, we recently moved to a condo with heated, underground parking.  No more parking issues!

Oh geez, sorry your mom had to go through that!  Smiley Sad  But I also totally understand.

One time, decades ago and at another house, we were burglarized while out of town for a weekend.   They went through my drawers!   They kind of ransacked the place, took a lot of my jewelry and a lot of money.  Kids, probably.   They left all the electronics.

Ok, but that wasn't even the only bad part.  We called the police and I will never forget sitting on one end of the couch with the police officer on the other end of the couch and having him ask me 'so how does it feel, knowing that some guy went through your underwear drawer?'.   Freaking really?

Like I said, this was decades ago (3+) and there was a reason I didn't go OFF on the guy.  I noticed, on the coffee table, there was one of my huge German ashtrays upon which sat a joint.  (oops!)     He had to see it.  I didn't start anything.  Smiley Wink

OMG, that entire incident was awful!  They went through my mother's drawers, too.  She kept fancy slips in the bottom drawer and some jewelry under that.  They'd found it and she was also creeped out about them handling her under garments.

OK, you know I love you, but that story about the joint is hysterical, lol.  What a jerk the cop was, skeevy.

I've always told my daughter NEVER cross anyone in LE.  Yes, sir, yes, ma'am.  Don't complain, just shut up and be as business-like as possible.

Ha!  I get you.  Smiley Happy   Cop definitely skeevy.  But when I suddenly noticed the 'ashtray situation' I couldn't believe that that huge detail had eluded me.

In retrospect, it is pretty hilarious.   Back then in this state, I imagine that even a joint would have gotten a person in big trouble.  Needless to say, if there was that - there was probably more elsewhere.  This was 35+ years ago.  I kind of felt like that cop was not a very good guy and he probably figured it gave him license to say something salacious because - what am I going to do?  Either he gets away with it or I end up in jail.    They take control over women in so many ways, sometimes.  Smiley Wink

Oh, I know.  My college roommate had a road problem driving at night once, decades ago.  An LE officer stopped, came to see what the trouble was and forced her into a sexual act.  Long story short, she was able to prove it.

Re: Speaking of Neighbors....

KityyLoutoo - I just happened to look out front - my next door neighdor parked his big honking pickup truck in front of my house and as I was standing out front trying to figure out if I should mow the grass, the Grandmother, also my next door neighbor pulled into my driveway so she could turn around and also park in front of my house.

It sounds like they don't know how to be neighborly. I'd avoid them if at all possible. My nearest neighbor has a pet cow, pet sheep, a large parrot, and a cat. We live in a residential neighborhood but our neighbor apparently would like to treat it like a farm. She just got a bunch of chickens who chase after people walking their dogs. My beagle goes nuts with all the barnyard sound effects...and smells. Apparently an old zoning ordinance forbidding these "pets" expired. Who knew that we'd have to worry about farm animals in the suburbs?

@Vivian

I'd call your City Council or County Supervisor about this!  Farm animals shouldn't be allowed in a residential neighborhood!  The zoning ordinance needs to be updated!!  You may want to go to the next City Council meeting and speak about this problem!  Good luck!!!

Re: Speaking of Neighbors....

It wouldn't bother me if they parked in front of my house unless I had people coming over and they needed a place to park.  The parking cones are a bit passive aggressive.  If you want them to stop parking in front of your house - just tell them.
