Re: Sounds That You Heard Growing Up...

The sounds of boats on the Mississipppi River, train whistles, and church bells chiming the hour.  I grew up in NOLA, near the river.  Now I'm in the suburbs and I'm more likely to hear lawnmowers and leaf blowers lol. But in my friend's neighborhood, just a short distance away, you can hear church bells from the nearby church.

Railroad trains and air planes. We lived in the middle of both.

I saw this question on Facebook and found it interesting.

I miss hearing church bells.  They were so comforting as a child.

I live near a Catholic Church and the bells ring every hour and half past as well, from 7 am to 8 pm every day.

Electric street cars. Very quiet.

Their only sound was:  The occasional Ding-a-ling sound of their ringing bell when something or someone was in their way.

I can still hear that pleasant sound.

So interesting.....  When I was about 5 or 6 we lived close to an Indian Reservation in New Mexico.  When I went to bed, sometimes I would hear the drumbeats and chanting coming from the reservation.  It scared me until my Mom explained that the Indians were most likely celebrating and having a good time.  I was never scared after that.

My mother's sewing machine, she was an Ace sewer and made wonderful outfits.

My father's typewriter clacking.  He was an exceptional Wordsmith and Technical editor.

When I was little, growing up in Chicago, I would hear a particular sound inside the department stores in the Loop.

The department store chimes.

Anyone remember them?

Distant trains, loons owls and mourning doves, moms calling in their kids in the evenings.
