We have seen this many times in PA. We have had homes in new developments 4 times, which probably explains why this sales idea is relatively common.
The guys go to N. Carolina where furniture is plentiful and really a bargain. They purchase pieces they think will be saleable and come back up north with the items.
Then they pull into developments and apartment complexes to look for sales. People often don't have the furniture they need for new homes or for company coming during the holidays.
I'm not saying that it isn't possible there are stolen items in some trucks, but most are owner/operators and legit. Good deals are available, but usually not warranty's or guarantees, so buyers need to be aware.
When my husband owned a trucking company he shared warehouse space with a number of these "companies" and heard about what they do. Apparently understanding styles and what sells is a learning curve of hits & misses, a financial carp* shoot, and a lot of time away from home.

I finally put up a wrought iron fence with a locking gate in front of the house. The back yard is walled and on a cliff. NOBODY will get over that.........
