@CoffeeNut wrote:Sounds like an employee who works at your regular bank or credit union may be dishonest. At the bottom of your check is your routing number and account number. Anyone can easily write that info down. Then they tested with small transfers to see.
I was thinking the exact thing! It sounds like someone inside the credit union or the bank I wrote the check to, nobody else would have seen the check. I may ask my retirees facebook page if anyone else as had issue.

@Tori3569 wrote:If you're writing checks to your bank, I wonder if that's how someone got your account number--from the paper check.
Could be I did it via the bank app on my phone, not sure if that is better or worse! In over 20 years with the credit union I have never had any issue but the bad guys are getting more abundant.

So sorry that happened @spumoni99 ! You'll get your money back. Just give the credit union time to process it. There is so much fraud going on out there these days. It's terrible!
I don't understand the TMI comment. Thanks for letting us know. We all need to keep close tabs on our accounts these days.

@Kachina624 wrote:@spumoni99. Your account should be FDIC insured. What does the credit union say?
@Kachina624, hopefully someone will correct me if I'm wrong but I believe FDIC and NCUA coverage is for when the institution fails and is unable to return/transfer the money in covered accounts. It would not apply to theft.

@spumoni99 wrote:I have an account at a local credit union I rarely use, I am retired from the state so its the state credit union. I always have my check deposited there then I write a check to my regular bank, that is all the account is ever used for. I only did this because when there were issues with the state the credit union always guaranteed our paycheck even if there was a problem with the state funds.
Anyway I noticed my deposit was returned so I checked the credit union account and saw a 9100 withdrawl! I don't use an atm on that account. It was transferred to a large bank so hopefully the bank can get the money back. SCARY! In all of my 62 years I have never had anything like this happen! I thought maybe it was just someone keying in the wrong account number but the day before the big transfer there were two small .20 cent and .22 cent transfer so it seems like someone was testing it?
The .20 cent and .22 cent transfers WERE tests prior to a wire transfer. When we settled on my deceased Aunt's house in May, the closing company moved the proceeds to the estate account via wire transfer. They tested it by transferring 2 small amounts (less than a dollar each) before sending the balance. This was also done when I transferred some of those funds to another estate account. So someone transferred this money from your credit union account to their account. Your credit union's Security/Fraud Unit should be working with you to recover those funds. Something's rotten in Denmark and it would behoove them to find the thief. Good luck!

So sorry that happened to you. It's worrisome that this kind of theft is getting so common that it's really ridiculous. Can you tell that I HATE thieves! We all work hard for what we own and they think they can just come in and take it. Grrr.
I agree thinking that the small amounts taken were probably a trial to see if it worked. I know credit card companies watch for that as suspicious activity. I hope they catch whoever did it and that your money is back in your account quickly.

@Marp that's what I think too. It only applies when a bank goes belly up.

I have all accounts set so that I get daily notices of all transactions, even one cent.
I need to do this, if I hadn't noticed the deposit got reversed who knows how long till I caught it.
