@esmerelda  I took mine early because I was sick of working. I worked over 40 years and wanted to live my life doing whatever I wanted every day. And I have been for the last ten years.

@proudlyfromNJ  And you aren't who I meant. You took it to live your life, not because you thought you would die in a few years. Good for you!

I don't, I think it is being honest and real. Nothing sad about that.  Having fun and enjoying life with my social security makes me very happy.

Would like to reiterate this.

You can only make a small income if on SS before  your full retirement date.

Your SS will be cut for the time you had the other income.

Can you file for unemployment?

I turn 62 in a few weeks and I am waiting. When you take early SS, you can only make so much money out side of that or your SS decreases. Check that out, the pensions that you have may cancel out some of your SS money.

Full retirement age is not 66 years for everyone.

Be sure you know your exact full retirement age.

Full Retirement

Don't get your information from Google, go to SSA.gov

because you delayed getting benefits for 48 months.

@esmerelda , It's not so much sad as it's realistic. No matter what your health situation, you really don't have control over " check out" time.  It's an individual decision, and I'm completely satisfied with the choice I made.

All depends on one's financial status.  If one can afford to put it off til full retirement - good for them.

In my case I opted to collect early.  It is just me, and I needed that extra income.   I figure a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush!!

I too did the math and it would have taken me an extra 15+ years to break even.  My full retirement age is 66 1/2 so I'd be nearly 80 before making a profit.  The way the world is going right now, I'm glad I'm on the books.

I can't file for unemployment. I also have my won health insuance from where I previously worked. Thanks to everyone for their input. So many decions to make when you get old.

Right?  Smiley Happy   I stopped working at 50 so I've spent the last 15 years with plenty of time on my hands to watch myself get old.   It's so weird and creepy, but fascinating when you pay a lot of attention to all of it.

When you see other old people it's so different from when you see yourself getting there and if that weren't enough it's like you are young and then *BAM* you're old.

I kind of wish you got to know when your expiration date would be.   I wonder what society would be like if everybody knew when they would die.  Maybe not so good, over all, but I'd like to know when mine is.  Smiley Happy
