From THE AMERICAN LUNG ASSOCIATION

WHAT IS IN A CIGARETTE?

There are approximately 600 ingredients in cigarettes. When burned, they create more than 7,000 chemicals. At least 69 of these chemicals are known to cause cancer, and many are poisonous.

Many of these chemicals also are found in consumer products, but these products have warning labels. While the public is warned about the danger of the poisons in these products, there is no such warning for the toxins in tobacco smoke.

Here are a few of the chemicals in tobacco smoke and other places they are found:

  • Acetone – found in nail polish remover
  • Acetic Acid –  an ingredient in hair dye
  • Ammonia – a common household cleaner
  • Arsenic – used in rat poison
  • Benzene – found in rubber cement
  • Butane – used in lighter fluid
  • Cadmium – active component in battery acid
  • Carbon Monoxide – released in car exhaust fumes
  • Formaldehyde – embalming fluid
  • Hexamine – found in barbecue lighter fluid
  • Lead – used in batteries
  • Naphthalene – an ingredient in mothballs
  • Methanol – a main component in rocket fuel
  • Nicotine – used as insecticide
  • Tar – material for paving roads
  • Toluene - used to manufacture paint

My mom has been a smoker almost all her life. I've tried so hard to convince her to stop to no avail. Not even breast cancer made her stop. Not even the idea of getting another type of cancer deters her.

She's spending a fortune to get dental implants since many fell out after radiation treatment. I suggested now would be a great time to stop so her mouth stays nice looking and she is undeterred. She said just bury me when the time comes.

If that's not addiction, I don't know what is. I had to ask a few times for her not to smoke in front of me while I was pregnant. It's like auto pilot.

The silver lining is that her habit made me want to never smoke anything. I hardly drink. I don't want to be addicted to anything period except good habits.

Personally, I find drunks much more repugnant.  I have no sympathy for them.  They kill people in auto crashes and throw their beer cans in my yard.  I know so many people whose parents were alcoholics.  It's very destructive.  I can't believe they still allow people to drink in restaurants.

I just find this attitude so sad.  Alcoholics are addicted.  The ads for alcohol are everywhere.  It's hard to go into a restaurant without seeing a fully stocked bar.  We don't know how to help addicts.  People need help, not scorn.

Usually a dentist will not do full mouth implants on a smoker as their habit causes bone loss.

I think it's pretty evident that people with addictions need counseling problem is getting them to go.

Probably most of the country would be in rehab then.

It seems like the point of the OP in this thread was to not say they detest smokers because they are addicts, but because of certain bad habits they develop as a result of the addiction that are inconsiderate of others.  I think it's possible to have sympathy for those who struggle with addiction, but to also be critical of behavior like blowing smoke into other people's faces or littering.  Being an addict doesn't give one permission to infringe upon the health and safety of others.  If it did, drunk drivers who commit murder would go to rehab instead of prison.

I think you have provided very good support for those who are addicted and if you had the time would be great to start a thread like that in Wellness. I don't know your profession but I think you'd be a good counselor. @Noel7
