Don't human beings program the intelligence into these machines?

IMO Don't humans continue to explore and gather more and more intelligence?

Technological singularity, as with artificial intelligence?

Hi Noel, I guess you're right. From Wikipedia:

The technological singularity hypothesis is that accelerating progress in technologies will cause a runaway effect wherein artificial intelligence will exceed human intellectual capacity and control, thus radically changing or even ending civilization in an event called the singularity.[1] Because the capabilities of such an intelligence may be impossible to comprehend, the technological singularity is an occurrence beyond which events are unpredictable or even unfathomable.[2]

The first use of the term "singularity" in this context was by mathematician John von Neumann. In 1958, regarding a summary of a conversation with von Neumann, Stanislaw Ulam described "ever accelerating progress of technology and changes in the mode of human life, which gives the appearance of approaching some essential singularity in the history of the race beyond which human affairs, as we know them, could not continue".[3] The term was popularized by science fiction writer Vernor Vinge, who argues that artificial intelligence, human biological enhancement, or brain–computer interfaces could be possible causes of the singularity.[4]

Thanks, focksie!

Re: "The first use of the term 'singularity' in this context was by mathematician John von Neumann."

I'm lost there, I'm definitely not the math person in this house. DH is, and DD inherited his ability from him.

I really find this part interesting:

"The term was popularized by science fiction writer Vernor Vinge, who argues that artificial intelligence, human biological enhancement, or brain–computer interfaces could be possible causes of the singularity."

Does anyone else here watch "Person of Interest" on television?

IMO the singularity is what that show is all about. We're devoted fans. At this point in the story, there are two major machines that have reached the point of singularity and are dueling it out with each other.

Humans put in data. There are computers that can put it all together and ""think: faster than humans. As in diagnosing patients.

Fans here too. I haven't watched this season's episodes yet so..... Yes, two machines are battling it out; each was programmed by different individuals though. They, the machines, seem to have gone beyond what they were originally programmed to do.

I really don't mean anything offensive by this and hope you won't take it that way, but I'm curious. You do ask some rather "strange" questions sometimes. I think I'm a very intelligent person, but I don't even know what you mean by this or a few other things you've said or questioned. Where do these things come from? {#emotions_dlg.confused1}

I could have written your exact post, kitty - lol! And OP, I truly don't mean any offense to you - being a little different is a good thing in my book!

Would this concept sort of be like Hal in 2001: A Space Odyssey?
