When I was a young lady my Mom told me some "rules" she felt a LADY would follow. Things like not going to a man's house or hotel alone, not sitting at a bar, no hitchhiking.

I've sat in the bar area many times while dining solo.

I just  make sure to leave my thigh high stiletto boots in the car and grab my white gloves and pearls.

Personally I prefer standing at the edge of the bar. Then I pretend to drop my purse on the floor and sloooowly bend over to pick it up. Works every time.

re men not wanting to eat alone

When I travel for business, I am always surprised at how many times men will ask to sit with me.  This happens frequently at breakfast but a few times at dinner as well.  They will be seated at the table right next to me and ask if they can move over.  They always pay for my meal, so it's a win-win and I meet interesting people.

PS.  They have all been married men.

My gf husbands tell me it's because I look "safe."  LOL
