@Annabellethecat66, they were home schooled. The oldest was 29 I think they said, so it's something they started years ago.  It's the parents!  But many years ago, people decided to not get involved (in other people's problems).  Remember the woman who stood on the street being stabbed to death and people watched it going on from their apartment windows? People don't want to get involved.  This is where the suffering comes in. (To me).  Sad for the human race.

I can't speak for the family/neighbors mentioned here, but for 10 years, as a preschool bus driver, I was a mandatory reporter. The things we saw never, thankfully, reached this level, but when we did report things, nothing was ever done. As we dealt mostly with undereducated, poor, and/or lower class people (not meaning that in a bad way, it was the purpose of the school program to help these), a little education on appropriateness might have gone a long way. Sometimes the teachers were able to help, but even they were frustrated.  And this is in a primarily upper-class city, two universities, several major corporate headquarters, etc.

One thing is people are so into their lives, that some do not even question things now , also if you happen to ask questions you are said to be nosey.

When you lose some one you L~O~V~E, that Memory of them, becomes a TREASURE.

@qualitygal I believe you are talking about Kitty Genovese. This happened in 1964. Clearly the don't get involved attitude goes back to then and before. Cults have been around forever as well as this behavior. Due to a 24/7 news cycle we hear about them now.

What I do find disturbing is that opinions and judgements are made without knowing the facts i.e children were homeschooled. This is the attitude of those who don't answer their front door and peer through the curtains to find out what is going on with everyone else. You cannot know what is going on in someone else's house unless you actually go and see it with your own eyes.

Some parents do a great job homeschooling, others not at all.

I think there needs to be an "across the board" rules to follow for every state.

For example, testing, Dr visits, evaluations.

People should not be allowed to file as a private school and never have interaction with any reporting authority.

If you have nothing to hide, any of these checks should be no problem.

I for one am sick to death of people hiding under the cloak of religion to commit horrible abuse. We see this in other parts of the world and all agree that it is barbaric but somehow excuses are made when it is in our own backyard.

These so called religious movements are nothing but cults that are patriarchal in nature and give free rein to the isolation and abuse of women and children stunting their emotional growth and brainwashing them into zombies. Did no one get a clue when they saw all these malnourished children in identical dress smiling like robots in Las Vegas at their creepy parents’ vow renewal? Or did they justify it by saying they were well behaved? I had the Duggars’ number the first time I saw them and am horrified that there is still a tv show making money off this pathology.

Just do some research on the Quiverfull movement and check out the founders on you tube demonstrating how to whip your children and tell me this is religion. Sick, sick, sick!

Thank you for letting me rant. I only do this once every ten years or so.😊

@JavaQueen  Agree with you -- Don't blame a loving, higher power, but blame broken, man-made religion that sick people hide behind. Grevious evil.

My guess is that people are afraid to contact the authorities in case they are wrong or nothing is done about it.  Then they will be fingered as a troublemaker.  I don't think this has anything to do with their religion.  These people are child abusers, plain and simple.  I wonder whether they will offer an insanity defense.  How could parents make their children suffer like this?  You'd think they'd be incapable of inflicting such cruelty.

I can tell you why people don't 'see' or 'say' anything.

Because like on these boards, when someone in our lives makes a judgment call about a situation with someone, everyone is piling on and saying to mind your own business, who are you to judge, how do you know what is really going on, and don't you have better things to do than stick your nose in other people's business.

I see it here every time someone complains about a neighbor, a relative or a co worker. People are accused of making assumptions, judging those different than themselves, being anything from racist to mean spirited. The mantra on those threads is MYOB.

And so it goes in society. Stick your nose out and you will have people coming down on you from all sides.

Is it sad no one thought to make a call to authorities? Yes.

But I can see why people don't.
